The MacGruber app was a free promotional download for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad that paired a short bomb-defusing game with character-themed extras for the 2010 film. Historical coverage documents what it offered, but does not establish whether it can still be downloaded or used on current iOS devices.
What was the MacGruber iPhone app?
Released as a movie-marketing tie-in, the app was designed to bring fans into the world of MacGruber rather than serve as a full-length standalone game. A 2010 trade report described a mix of a small interactive game, character personalization, and promotional content. Universal Pictures digital marketing manager Ben Blatt said the app was intended to introduce existing fans and a new audience to the character.

Use the soundboard and promotional media
The reported extras included a soundboard of lines from the film, ringtones, wallpapers, a plot synopsis, and a video trailer. The historical descriptions document those features at launch, not whether any audio, video, or other connected content still works today.
Which movie did the app promote?
Universal Pictures identifies MacGruber as a 2010 action comedy directed by Jorma Taccone and starring Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Val Kilmer, Powers Boothe, and Maya Rudolph. Its story follows special operative MacGruber as he tries to recover a stolen nuclear warhead. The US studio page lists an R rating and a runtime of 1 hour 35 minutes. A contemporary app item said the film was scheduled for theatrical release on May 21, 2010.

Can you still download the MacGruber app?
Its present-day availability is unverified. Historical reports establish that the app existed and describe its 2010 features, but they do not confirm a current App Store listing, compatibility with modern iOS, or an archival source offering a working copy. Treat old references to the app as historical, not as evidence that it can be installed now.

No. The DVD is a separate home-video release of the film, not a copy of the iPhone app. Universal’s current movie page lists a DVD edition, including an unrated edition. In a 2010 announcement, Universal Studios Home Entertainment set DVD and Blu-ray release for September 7, 2010, and said both formats would include theatrical and unrated versions. Check a specific edition’s listing for its contents; the announcement does not say the app was included.
