1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn historical socket-tool catalogs, “miniature drive” or “midget drive” means a compact socket-and-driver system, not one universally standardized size. Snap-on’s 9/32-inch square-drive tools, reported from around 1925, are a strong candidate for the earliest documented system in that narrow category—but small hex-drive tools came earlier, so the evidence does not establish them as the first miniature drive of every kind.
What “miniature drive” means
In this context, “drive” is the interface that connects a socket to the handle or ratchet that turns it. Early miniature or midget socket tools did not all use the same interface: some used a hex connection, while others used a square drive. The historical terms describe a small-tool category rather than a single standard size.
That distinction matters when asking which system came first. The answer depends on whether “first” means the earliest small socket tool of any interface or the earliest documented compact square-drive system.
The early miniature socket-drive systems
| System | Interface and size | Early evidence | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Williams midget tools | 5/16-inch hex drive | Alloy Artifacts reports that Williams had a line before moving to square drive; the page does not give a start date. Alloy Artifacts: Williams tools | Small hex-drive socket tools predated Williams’ 9/32-inch square-drive line, but the available account does not establish when the hex line began. |
| Snap-on midget tools | 9/32-inch square drive | A catalog-history account dates their appearance to around 1925, initially in the No. 55 set. Alloy Artifacts: Snap-on tools | A strong candidate for the earliest documented 9/32-inch square-drive midget system; the account says Snap-on was “as far as is known” the originator of the size. |
| Williams M-310 set | 9/32-inch square drive | Alloy Artifacts identifies a 1936 catalog listing and says Williams shifted from 5/16-inch hex to 9/32-inch square drive sometime between 1933 and 1936. Alloy Artifacts: Williams tools | Evidence that another maker adopted the 9/32-inch square-drive system by 1936. |
| Blackhawk and other makers | 1/4-inch square drive | A G503 forum discussion says Blackhawk introduced it in 1935 and notes other makers’ miniature tools by the late 1930s. G503 discussion | Useful context for the spread of 1/4-inch square drive, but the discussion says the absolute first maker is uncertain. |
So, what was the first?
If the question means the first documented square-drive midget socket system identified in these accounts, Snap-on’s 9/32-inch system, reported from around 1925, is the best-supported answer. Alloy Artifacts bases this chronology on catalog-history research; it is not a date established by Snap-on’s official company history.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If “miniature drive” includes any small socket-and-driver interface, the answer is less certain. Williams’ earlier 5/16-inch hex-drive tools show that small socket systems existed outside the 9/32-inch square-drive category. The available evidence does not establish which manufacturer made the first miniature tool of any design.
How 9/32-inch and 1/4-inch drives differ
Both are square-drive dimensions, but they are not the same size. The historical accounts describe 9/32-inch as an early midget size and 1/4-inch as a later miniature square-drive size used by several manufacturers. They do not establish that tools of these sizes are interchangeable. Nor should either be confused with Williams’ 5/16-inch hex-drive system, which has a different interface.

What to check when identifying a vintage set
- Read the drive dimension: distinguish 9/32-inch square drive from 1/4-inch square drive and 5/16-inch hex drive.
- Confirm the interface: a size alone does not tell you whether the connection is square or hex.
- Check the specific tool’s fit: do not assume two sets or accessories are compatible based only on their being described as miniature or midget.
- Use catalog context where available: maker, set number, and catalog date can help distinguish a documented period example from a later or special-purpose tool.
