The original Apple iMac, announced in 1998 and now commonly called the iMac G3, is the conventional answer. It made USB the only general-purpose interface for connecting external peripherals, replacing older standards such as ADB, serial, and SCSI. The evidence supports calling it the first mainstream computer to take that approach—not definitively the first computer ever to include USB.
What “USB-only” meant on the original iMac
The claim is about peripheral expansion, not every connector or communications feature on the computer. A product-history account describes the original model as having two USB ports as its only external expansion, while also noting an infrared port and an internal modem. The iMac therefore did not lack other connections; USB was the general-purpose route for attaching peripherals.

Why the answer is “first mainstream,” not “first ever”
“First mainstream computer to use USB as its only peripheral expansion interface” is a narrower claim than “first computer to have USB.” The available historical evidence supports the former as the conventional description, but does not establish an exhaustive ranking of every earlier computer that may have included USB.

Apple later described the iMac as “one of the first computers to include USB and FireWire® ports for easy and fast connections to a wide range of peripherals.” That is Apple’s own retrospective wording, not independent proof of absolute priority. Apple’s April 19, 2001 release
USB was also gaining support elsewhere around the same time. Intel’s June 25, 1998 announcement discussed Windows 98’s native USB support and a growing variety of USB devices. That context shows USB adoption was broader than Apple’s launch; it does not settle which computer first used the standard or establish a market-wide ranking. Intel’s announcement

Announcement, shipping, and later iMacs
Apple announced the original iMac on May 6, 1998; a product-history account says it shipped in August. Those are separate milestones, so the May date is the announcement date, not the start of shipping. Apple-History’s iMac account
