The Intel 4004 is generally considered the first complete CPU integrated onto a single chip and the first commercially available microprocessor. Intel announced it as a stand-alone product on November 15, 1971. That answer needs a qualification: processor systems existed earlier, but they used multiple chips.
What does “first CPU chip” mean?
The phrase can refer to different milestones: the first processor design, the first processor system, or the first complete CPU contained on one silicon chip. For the last definition—and for the first commercially available microprocessor—the answer is Intel’s 4004. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History describes it as the first complete CPU on a single chip and dates its release to November 15, 1971.
This wording does not mean the 4004 was the first processor of any kind, the first electronic computer, or a complete computer on a chip. The Computer History Museum notes earlier processor implementations using multiple chips, including the six-chip Garrett AiResearch MP944 set designed for the F-14A Central Air Data Computer.
What was the Intel 4004 made to do?
The 4004 began as part of a custom calculator project. In 1969, Japanese calculator maker Busicom (Nippon Calculating Machine Corporation) commissioned Intel to develop chips for its 141-PF printing calculator. The initial plan called for 12 custom chips; Intel’s redesign used a four-chip set, with the 4004 serving as its programmable CPU. Intel’s 4004 history describes this development and the calculator’s role.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 4004 was therefore a CPU chip within a larger chipset, not a calculator by itself. Supporting chips completed the MCS-4 system. Intel’s account says the programmable design could also be used for operations in other devices, beyond the original calculator application.
How did the 4004 fit into the history of processors?
Its landmark was integration: the CPU’s function fit on one chip. Earlier systems could perform processor work through multiple chips, so calling the 4004 simply “the first processor” erases an important distinction. The more precise description is that it was the first complete single-chip CPU and the first commercially available microprocessor, as the Smithsonian and Intel’s historical account describe it.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Intel identifies the 4004 as a 4-bit processor; the Smithsonian collection record lists 2,300 transistors. Those figures describe the 4004 chip, not the complete calculator system.
Who worked on the Intel 4004?
Intel’s account credits Marcian E. “Ted” Hoff with the architectural concept, Federico Faggin with leading subsequent design work, and Stan Mazor with contributing to the design. Busicom engineer Masatoshi Shima is also named among the project’s contributors. Hoff later reflected, “With this product, we changed people’s perception of computers and the direction that the computing industry would go. We democratized the computer.” Intel presents this as a retrospective statement; it does not date the quotation.

What is the most accurate short answer?
If “first CPU chip” means the first complete CPU integrated onto one chip, the answer is the Intel 4004. It was announced as a stand-alone product on November 15, 1971, after being developed for Busicom’s printing calculator. Earlier multi-chip processor systems mean it is more accurate to call the 4004 the first single-chip CPU than the first processor of any kind.
