A “Plotter in a Cartridge” was a Pacific Data Products accessory that let certain HP LaserJet printers interpret HP-GL plotter commands and print the resulting drawing. It was a printer cartridge—not an ink cartridge for a plotter. In the HP 8510C setup described in its manual, the cartridge was needed because the analyzer could not send the escape sequence required to switch a compatible printer into its built-in HP-GL mode.
What did the Plotter in a Cartridge do?
The cartridge supplied HP-GL emulation for supported laser printers. HP-GL is a language used to describe plotter drawings. With the cartridge installed, the printer could accept those commands, render the drawing in its own memory, and print it on a page. The HP 8510C Operating and Programming Manual, hosted by MIT TJR Lab, puts it simply: “The cartridge essentially turns the laser printer into a plotter.” HP 8510C Operating and Programming Manual
This product name should not be confused with an ink cartridge used by a plotter. It referred to a printer accessory that enabled command interpretation, not a container of plotting ink.
Why did the HP 8510C setup need it?
The HP 8510C manual says some laser printers already included HP-GL emulation, but required a special escape sequence to activate it. The 8510C could not send that sequence, so the cartridge was required for that particular analyzer-and-printer workflow. The manual’s explanation does not mean that every printer capable of HP-GL always needed a cartridge; another host device might be able to switch the printer’s built-in emulation on.

Which printers were listed as compatible?
The HP 8510C manual documents two cartridge editions for its historical setup:

A 1989 HP Professional item also describes the cartridge as an HP-GL emulation cartridge for the LaserJet Series II, installed in the printer’s font-cartridge slot. These are period compatibility references, not confirmation of support for later printers. The sources do not establish that Standard and P.E. editions are interchangeable. Check the exact printer model, cartridge edition, and setup requirements before considering one for a specific system.

What features did period descriptions mention?
Trade coverage from 1989 described options including variable pen or line thickness, X- and Y-axis scaling, arcs and circles, plot rotation, fill and shading patterns, and paper sizing. A 1990 HP Professional article said the product offered capabilities associated with the HP 7475A and 7550A plotters on certain LaserJet models. It described 20 black pens with user-defined widths and noted that the cartridge required additional printer memory.
Memory needs were model-specific in the 1990 article, so those statements should not be collapsed into one memory requirement for every printer and cartridge combination. The descriptions are historical product reporting, not a current specification sheet.

How should historical speed and price claims be read?
Period publications included promotional and reported figures, which should be understood in context rather than treated as current performance guarantees:
- A 1989 Pacific Data Products advertisement in BYTE claimed up to 99 copies and 1/300-inch resolution.
- A 1990 HP Professional article reported a product claim of imaging speeds up to 150 meters per second. That is an attributed historical claim, not a verified general operating rate.
- HP Professional listed a $395 price in 1989, and a 1990 advertisement also listed the cartridge at $395. These are historical prices, not current market values.
None of these figures establishes present-day performance, availability, or price.

Does the cartridge make sense for a printer today?
Only the historical compatibility and workflow described in the period sources are established here. They do not show whether cartridges are currently available, what condition surviving units are in, or whether a particular printer setup will work reliably today. For a vintage system, identify the printer model and cartridge edition first, then confirm the host device’s HP-GL output and any model-specific memory or configuration requirements.
