Virtual reality walking is a way to move through a virtual environment using real walking, steps in place, or a system that subtly redirects a person’s path. It is one category of VR locomotion: the user’s walking-like movement drives virtual travel, although the distance and direction in the virtual world do not always match movement through the physical room.
How walking becomes movement in VR
A VR headset displays the virtual scene; tracking and software determine how movement affects the viewpoint. The headset alone does not provide a walking method. Depending on the system, a person’s steps may be mapped directly into the virtual world, interpreted as stepping in place, or subtly redirected to fit the available physical space.
Walking-based locomotion differs from methods such as steering with a controller, selecting a destination to teleport to, or directly manipulating position or direction. Those are other ways to navigate VR, but they do not ordinarily map walking motions to virtual movement.
Four approaches to virtual reality walking
| Approach | How it moves you | Space and tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Real tracked walking | You physically walk, and tracking maps your movement into the virtual environment. | Walking can feel natural, but the route is limited by the tracked physical area. |
| Walking in place (WIP) | You step on the spot to drive virtual movement; head or body orientation, or gestures, may control heading. | It can work with little tracking space. Basic methods may make lateral or backward movement harder to represent. |
| Redirected walking (RDW) | The system subtly changes the relationship between your physical path and the virtual view or route. | It can fit a longer virtual route into a smaller workspace, but depends on redirection that the user does not notice. |
| Treadmill or repositioning hardware | Specialized equipment supports viewpoint movement while you remain within the tracking area. | Such hardware can be bulky and expensive; its mechanics may reduce presence. |
What the terms mean
Real tracked walking
This is the most literal form: you walk in the physical space, and the tracking system translates that movement into the virtual environment. The room sets practical limits on how far and where you can go.

Walking in place
Walking in place uses stepping as a proxy for travel. It can reduce the amount of room needed compared with walking freely, but translating steps into direction and movement beyond forward travel is a design challenge. A 2024 study by Kim and Lee evaluated two WIP methods supporting lateral and backward movement with 15 participants; that study demonstrates work on those controls, not a guarantee of how every system will perform. Read the study.
Redirected walking
Redirected walking manipulates the mapping between the physical route and the virtual view so that a person can experience a virtual path while staying within a smaller real workspace. The University of Hamburg describes the technique as a way to guide physical movement while the user believes they are following a virtual route. See the project explanation.

One example uses auditory step feedback. Weller, Brennecke, and Zachmann explain the idea this way: “The main idea is to achieve path manipulation by changing step noises to deviate the users, who still believe that they are walking a straight line.” Read the paper.

Treadmill-based repositioning
A treadmill or similar device is a specialized way to support movement while keeping the user within the tracking space. It is not required for VR walking. A study discussing omnidirectional treadmills notes bulk and expense as drawbacks and says their mechanics can reduce presence. Read the 2024 paper.

What redirected-walking measurements do—and do not—show
In a 2022 within-subject study, Weller, Brennecke, and Zachmann used a 10 × 20 m test area. They reported average translational redirection of 1.7 m with audio feedback and average amplification of 80 cm from visual methods at 20 m. These are results from that particular study setup, not expected performance figures for every headset, application, or user. Study details.
Choosing the right meaning and method
When someone says “VR walking,” they may mean literal tracked walking or any walking-like input used to navigate. To understand a specific system, check which movement it tracks and how it controls direction. The useful comparison points are:

- Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers translate instinctive hand gestures and detailed finger actions directly into VR with self-tracking cameras and precision controls. Multi-point, advanced haptics make virtual interactions feel entirely real
- Available room: real walking needs a tracked route; walking in place needs less physical travel; redirection aims to accommodate a virtual route in a smaller workspace.
- Movement feel: physical walking most directly resembles ordinary walking, while proxy steps and specialized equipment represent movement differently.
- Direction control: find out how the method handles heading, lateral movement, and backward movement rather than assuming all directions work alike.
- Equipment: a headset displays the scene, but tracking, software, and sometimes specialized hardware determine how locomotion works.
- Comfort and safety: no single approach is established as best for every user or application. Consider the physical space and how the system asks you to move.
Remember the physical room
When you move while wearing a headset, you still occupy and travel through real space. The virtual view does not remove walls, furniture, or other obstacles. A limited tracked area is one reason systems use stepping in place or redirection, but those methods do not make the physical surroundings disappear.
