Speaker wire carries an alternating audio signal from an amplifier, so it does not have one fixed voltage. The RMS voltage depends mainly on the amplifier’s output and the speaker load; it rises and falls with the audio waveform. As a calculated example, 100 watts into a nominal 8-ohm load is about 28.3 volts RMS, while 100 watts into 4 ohms is about 20 volts RMS.

How much voltage does speaker wire carry?

An amplifier produces an audio-frequency voltage across its speaker terminals. The speaker’s impedance affects how much current flows and how much power is delivered. Yamaha describes an amplifier’s role as supplying voltage to the loudspeaker and delivering the current it needs to move its voice coil (Yamaha, “Power Amplifiers Part Two: Handling Power”).

For a simplified resistive load, estimate RMS voltage with VRMS = √(P × R), where P is power in watts and R is resistance in ohms. At 100 watts, that gives approximately 28.3 volts RMS into 8 ohms, or 20 volts RMS into 4 ohms. For a sine wave, the corresponding peak voltages are about 40.0 volts and 28.3 volts. These are calculated examples, not fixed readings for every amplifier or speaker. Music varies over time, and a real loudspeaker’s impedance changes with frequency, so nominal 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm values are only approximations.

Why voltage drops along speaker wire

Speaker cable has resistance. Together, the cable and speaker act as a voltage divider, so the voltage at the speaker is lower than the voltage at the amplifier terminals. A simplified relationship is Vs = Va × Zs/(Zs + Zw), where Va is amplifier-terminal voltage, Zs is speaker impedance, and Zw is cable impedance. This approximation treats the speaker load as a single impedance; actual speaker impedance varies with frequency.

Resistance increases with cable length and decreases as conductor cross-sectional area increases. A lower AWG number means thicker wire. Cambridge Audio identifies resistance as the cable property most important to consider and notes its relationship to length and cross-sectional area (Cambridge Audio, speaker cables).

A practical design target is to keep total speaker-wire resistance below 5% of the speaker’s nominal impedance. Extron’s audio-cable guide recommends staying below 5% and says resistance should not exceed 10% (Extron, “Understanding Audio Cable”). The 5% target is the more conservative choice for limiting loss. For stereo, keep left and right cable paths similar in length to reduce level differences.

Choosing speaker-wire gauge and length

Gauge choice depends on the speaker load, cable run, and amplifier power—not on a universal maximum distance. Sony USA’s 2024 guidance says 12–16 AWG is the most common range for amplifier-to-speaker connections; it describes 16 AWG as generally sufficient for short runs and recommends thicker wire for longer runs (Sony USA, speaker-wire guidance). Klipsch’s support table gives these example maximum lengths for 16 AWG before signal degradation becomes a concern:

Nominal speaker impedance Klipsch 16 AWG example maximum length
4 ohms 24 feet
6 ohms 36 feet
8 ohms 48 feet

These figures are guidance from Klipsch’s support table, not guarantees for every amplifier, speaker, cable, or installation (Klipsch, speaker-wire gauge charts). Check the equipment manuals and, for a long run, a low-impedance load, or high power, consider 14 or 12 AWG. Calculate resistance for the full circuit: the current travels out to the speaker and back, so loop length is twice the one-way distance.

Low-impedance speaker wire versus 70/100 V systems

Home hi-fi commonly connects an amplifier’s low-impedance output directly to 4-, 6-, or 8-ohm speakers. For a given power, lower impedance requires more current, making cable resistance especially important.

Commercial distributed audio often uses transformer-coupled 70 V lines in the United States or 100 V lines in many other regions. In HARMAN’s 70 V example, a 100 W amplifier line is 70 V, 1.41 A, and 50 ohms; each loudspeaker uses a transformer to match the line (HARMAN, constant-voltage systems). The higher line voltage supports long runs and multiple speakers with less current and can allow smaller cable than an equivalent low-impedance installation. It requires compatible transformer-equipped speakers or matching transformers, suitable taps, appropriate insulation, and an amplifier output designed for that system.

  • Small, Mini Pack for Almost any Audio Amplifier to Speakers Wiring

Do not connect a 70/100 V output directly to a conventional low-impedance speaker unless the equipment documentation explicitly provides the required transformer or output mode. A 4/8-ohm output is not a 70 V line.

Installation checks before connecting the wire

  1. Check the amplifier: Read its output mode and minimum-load specification. Confirm whether it is a low-impedance output or a 70/100 V line.
  2. Check the speaker: Confirm nominal impedance and power requirements. Treat nominal impedance as a guide because the real load varies with frequency.
  3. Measure the run: Record the one-way distance, then double it to get the full conductor loop length.
  4. Choose the conductor: Use copper cable with enough cross-sectional area to keep loop resistance under the chosen percentage of nominal speaker impedance. Thicker 14 or 12 AWG wire may be appropriate for longer runs, lower impedance, or higher power.
  5. Match cable to the route: For outdoor or in-wall installation, use insulation and listing appropriate to the route and local code. Follow the cable and equipment manufacturers’ instructions.
  6. Finish consistently: Keep stereo runs comparable in length and preserve polarity at both amplifier and speaker terminals.
