On an ESRB game label, content descriptors flag material that may have contributed to the rating or may matter to consumers. They are not the age rating itself, and they are not a complete inventory of everything in the game. Read the age category, descriptors and any available rating summary together.
What do video game content descriptors mean?
ESRB content descriptors are short labels that identify types of content associated with a game. The age-based rating category and the descriptors do different jobs: the category suggests age appropriateness, while descriptors give content signals that may help consumers decide whether a game is suitable for them or their family. ESRB explains the relationship in its ratings overview.
A descriptor is not a scene-by-scene report. ESRB says descriptors are applied relative to the assigned rating category and are not intended as a complete listing of content. A game can include material that is not named on its compact label, and a descriptor alone does not show how often something appears or the full context.
How do the violence descriptors differ?
The ESRB guide distinguishes violence descriptors by the nature and presentation of conflict, not by a universal severity ranking.
#1 Best Overall
| Descriptor | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Violence | Scenes involving aggressive conflict; may include bloodless dismemberment. |
| Fantasy Violence | Violent actions of a fantasy nature involving human or non-human characters in situations easily distinguished from real life. |
| Intense Violence | Graphic, realistic-looking physical conflict. It may include extreme or realistic blood and gore, weapons, and depictions of human injury and death. |
These definitions come from the ESRB Ratings Guide. Fantasy Violence is marked by its clearly fantastical setting or characters; Intense Violence concerns graphic, realistic-looking conflict. The descriptor does not, by itself, tell you how frequently the content occurs or how a particular scene is framed.
What is the difference between Drug Reference and Use of Drugs?
Drug Reference means the game includes references to or images of illegal drugs. Use of Drugs means it depicts the consumption or use of illegal drugs. In short, one signals reference or imagery; the other signals depicted use. Neither label alone tells you how often the material appears or supplies the scene’s full context. ESRB defines both in its Ratings Guide.
What does “Mild” mean before a descriptor?
When “Mild” precedes an ESRB content descriptor, it signals low frequency, intensity or severity of that content. It is a qualifier, not a guarantee that the material will be untroubling to every player. Individual sensitivities vary, and the label still does not provide a complete account of the game.

- Start with the age category. Use it as the broad age-appropriateness signal, then check the descriptors for content that may matter to the player.
- Look for the rating summary. ESRB provides summaries for many physical games; these add detail and context beyond the short descriptor list. Availability varies by game. Check the ESRB Ratings Guide or the game’s listing.
- Consider what the label does not say. Because descriptors are not a complete content inventory, do not treat the absence of a particular label as proof that related material never appears.
- Check interactive-element notices separately when relevant. Notices about online interaction, location sharing, in-game purchases or unrestricted internet access describe features; ESRB says these do not influence the rating assignment. See the ESRB ratings overview.
- Use device parental controls if needed. ESRB presents parental controls as an additional way for families to manage play, access by rating and in-game spending; the available settings depend on the device or platform.
ESRB’s process considers content and context, including reward systems and player control, and differs for physically distributed games and digitally distributed-only games. That is why the rating is a judgment about the game rather than a simple count of scenes. More detail is available on ESRB’s rating process page.

This guide explains ESRB terminology, most directly relevant to games carrying ESRB information, including US-facing listings. ESRB says its system was founded in 1994 and identifies itself as a founding rating authority of IARC, which covers digitally delivered games and mobile apps. That does not make ESRB descriptor names and definitions universal: other regions and rating systems may use different labels. See the ESRB ratings overview.
