VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) is a feature that lets a compatible USB-C connection carry DisplayPort audio and video. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not guarantee video output: the source device’s specific port must support DP Alt Mode.

How DisplayPort Alt Mode works

USB Type-C provides an alternate-mode framework that compatible devices can use to assign some or all of the connector’s four high-speed lanes to DisplayPort. Other connector signaling supports DisplayPort’s AUX channel and hot-plug detection. The result is a DisplayPort video connection carried over USB-C, rather than a conventional DisplayPort connector. VESA announced the first DisplayPort Alt Mode standard on September 22, 2014.

What DP Alt Mode does—and does not—guarantee

It enables DisplayPort audio and video over USB-C when the source port and the rest of the connection support the required functions. It does not mean every USB-C port, cable, adapter, or display can carry video. Check the specifications for the exact port on the computer, tablet, or phone, as well as the display’s input and the capabilities of any cable or adapter. VESA’s troubleshooting guidance identifies an unsupported source port as a possible reason a connection fails.

VESA’s December 13, 2016 compliance-test announcement described the standard this way: “The DisplayPort Alt Mode standard enables a USB-C connector and single cable to deliver full DisplayPort audio/video performance, with SuperSpeed USB data, and up to 100 watts of power.” That is a statement about what the standard’s single-cable arrangement can support—not a guarantee that every USB-C device or cable provides video, SuperSpeed USB data, and power together. VESA’s announcement and its 2014 announcement provide historical context for the up-to-100-watt figure.

How lane allocation affects data and bandwidth

DisplayPort can use some or all of USB-C’s four high-speed lanes. Using lanes for video affects how much high-speed USB data can travel at the same time; the actual result depends on the implementation and configuration.

In its April 29, 2020 announcement of DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, VESA described up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video when all four lanes are used, or up to 40 Gbps when SuperSpeed USB data is carried simultaneously. These are Alt Mode 2.0 figures from VESA’s announcement, not universal USB-C speeds or a promise of a particular device’s performance.

DP Alt Mode and USB4 are related but distinct

Native DisplayPort Alt Mode uses the USB-C alternate-mode framework to carry DisplayPort over the connector’s lanes. VESA’s Alt Mode 2.0 announcement also discusses DisplayPort 2.0 interoperability with USB4 and DisplayPort tunneling through USB4. Tunneling is not the same transport method as native DisplayPort Alt Mode, even though both can support DisplayPort functionality over a USB-C connection.

Connecting a USB-C device to a display

Choose the connection based on source-port support and the display’s available input. VESA describes USB-C-to-DisplayPort converter cables for displays with a DisplayPort input and suitable adapters for displays with HDMI, DVI, or VGA inputs. A dock or other intermediary may be useful when you need additional connectivity, but it must support the relevant DisplayPort connection.

  • Confirm that the exact source USB-C port supports DP Alt Mode.
  • Identify the input on the display and select a compatible cable or adapter for it.
  • Consider whether the setup also needs SuperSpeed USB data; lane allocation affects whether video and USB data can be carried together.
  • If using a dock or other intermediary, verify that it explicitly supports the DisplayPort connection you need.

Why a USB-C display connection may not work

If your USB-C connection does not work with a display or DisplayPort accessory, start with the source port rather than the connector’s shape. VESA’s troubleshooting page lists an unsupported source port and an intervening USB hub among possible causes. It says a USB hub does not support DisplayPort connections between its ports.

  1. Check the computer, tablet, or phone specifications for DP Alt Mode support on the specific port you are using.
  2. Connect the display directly to the source device to diagnose the connection.
  3. If the direct connection works, remove the USB hub from the path or use a dock or peripheral that explicitly supports the required DisplayPort connection.

VESA’s troubleshooting guidance covers these connection issues. A USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter cannot add DP Alt Mode support to a source port that lacks it.
