The Vera C. Rubin Observatory unveiled its first public images on June 23, 2025. The showcase included detailed views of the Trifid and Lagoon nebulae, galaxies, Milky Way stars, and asteroids. Those images came from early test observations—not from the full Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), which officially began on June 30, 2026.
What did Rubin Observatory see in its first images?
The First Look release presented several kinds of astronomical targets: clouds of gas and dust in nebulae, galaxies, stars in the Milky Way, and asteroids moving through the Solar System. The images showed what Rubin’s camera could reveal during early test observations; they were not all views of objects never seen before.
The Trifid and Lagoon nebulae
A standout image combines 678 separate observations made over just over seven hours, according to the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s 2025 release. Combining those exposures brought out faint details in the gas and dust of the Trifid and Lagoon nebulae, which lie several thousand light-years away. The LSST:UK Science Centre also described the composite as a combination of 678 images.
Galaxies, Milky Way stars, and asteroids
Across just over 10 hours of test observations, the U.S. National Science Foundation reported that Rubin had captured millions of galaxies and Milky Way stars, along with thousands of asteroids. The release counted 2,104 previously unseen asteroids, including seven near-Earth asteroids. That asteroid figure describes objects found in the test observations; it is separate from the 678 exposures used to create the nebula composite.

A zoom-out video assembled from more than 1,100 images showed about 10 million galaxies, according to the NSF. The agency described that view as roughly 0.05% of the approximately 20 billion galaxies expected to be captured over the LSST’s ten years. The 20-billion figure is a project expectation, not a count of galaxies in the First Look still image.
When were the first images released?
Rubin Observatory’s First Look images were released on June 23, 2025. They were a public showcase of early test observations, not the opening of the full LSST. The distinction matters: the observatory could produce striking test images before the long-term survey formally began.

Is Rubin Observatory taking new images now?
Yes. The LSST officially began on June 30, 2026, according to the observatory’s announcement that day. Rubin is a ground-based observatory on Cerro Pachón in Chile, jointly funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, and operated by NSF NOIRLab and SLAC.
The observatory’s June 30, 2026 update said its 3,200-megapixel camera was producing a detailed image about every 40 seconds. It reported roughly 10 terabytes of data and as many as seven million alerts per night, and said Rubin would return to each part of the sky about 800 times over the decade. These are operating figures reported at the survey’s start, not guarantees that every night or every part of the survey will match those rates.

What the LSST is designed to find
Rather than making a one-time portrait of the sky, the LSST will repeatedly observe the southern sky so astronomers can detect how it changes. Repeated coverage can help reveal moving Solar System objects, transient events such as supernovae, and variable stars, while also building a record of distant galaxies. The survey is also intended to support investigations of dark matter and dark energy.
The June 30, 2026 start announcement described the survey’s beginning as following system optimization and a review of technical readiness, data-system performance, and scientific validation. The First Look images therefore mark an earlier step in the observatory’s path: a preview from test observations, followed later by the start of the decade-long survey.
