There is no single upload speed that suits every live stream. Your connection needs to sustain the stream’s outgoing bitrate, with extra capacity for fluctuations and other devices using the network. For a useful starting point, Twitch advises allowing 30% more upload speed than your stream bitrate; YouTube’s H.264 recommendations range from 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps to 35 Mbps for 4K at 60 fps. Those YouTube figures are encoder bitrates, not internet-plan speed requirements.
Upload speed and stream bitrate are not the same thing
Bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends for the stream, usually expressed in megabits per second (Mbps). Upload speed is how quickly your internet connection can send data. A stream configured for a given bitrate needs an upload connection that can sustain at least that rate, but matching the two exactly leaves no room for network variation or competing uploads.
Your practical target depends on the platform, resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder bitrate, connection stability, and whether other people or devices are using the same upload capacity. A speed test is a snapshot; it does not guarantee that the connection will maintain that speed throughout a broadcast.
Recommended YouTube Live bitrates for H.264
YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate. Use the row that matches the stream you plan to send:

These are recommendations for the encoder’s outgoing video bitrate using H.264, not a list of internet plans to buy. YouTube gives different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265, so do not treat the H.264 figure as universal across codecs. In particular, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 60 fps is 12 Mbps; that is a stream bitrate, not an upload-speed target.
How much upload speed to allow
Twitch’s general rule of thumb is to have upload speed equal to the stream bitrate plus 30%. For example, Twitch says a 6 Mbps stream should have at least 8 Mbps of upload speed. This is Twitch’s guidance, not a guarantee for every platform, network, or setup. If your household is uploading files, making video calls, or streaming on other devices, those activities also use capacity.

For YouTube, the cited H.264 recommendations establish the encoder bitrate, but they do not give one universal multiplier for converting it into an internet-plan speed. Measure the connection you will actually use, test the intended stream, and leave enough spare capacity that the encoder is not competing with other traffic or operating at the edge of a variable connection.
Choose settings and test the connection
- Choose the platform and target. Decide where you will stream and the resolution and frame rate you actually need. Do not select a higher target merely because the encoder offers it.
- Set the platform-recommended bitrate for your codec. For YouTube, use the matching H.264 recommendation above only if you are encoding H.264; consult YouTube’s settings for AV1 or H.265 rather than transferring an H.264 number to another codec.
- Configure the encoder for a consistent stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, which should not exceed 4 seconds. Twitch also recommends CBR where possible.
- Check upload capacity under realistic conditions. Run an upload speed test on the same connection and, if possible, at the time and location you will stream. Treat the result as an indication, not a guarantee of sustained performance.
- Run a test stream. Include representative audio and movement, then check the platform’s stream-health indicators. A static scene may not reveal issues that appear during a more active broadcast.
- Adjust for reliability. If the stream drops frames or the platform reports connection problems, lower the bitrate first, or reduce resolution or frame rate until the stream is stable. A stable stream is preferable to settings that exceed the practical limits of your connection or computer.
Can you stream at 1080p60 with your upload speed?
For YouTube Live using H.264, 1080p at 60 fps has a recommended encoder bitrate of 12 Mbps. Your upload connection needs to sustain that outgoing data rate and have additional room for fluctuations and other network use. For Twitch, apply its bitrate-plus-30% rule to the bitrate you select. In either case, a speed test alone cannot confirm that the connection will remain stable; test the actual broadcast and monitor stream health.

Common upload-speed problems and fixes
- The upload test looks fast, but the stream drops frames: the test may not reflect sustained capacity during the broadcast. Test at the time and place you stream, check platform stream health, and reduce bitrate or video settings if the problem persists.
- The stream struggles when someone else uses the internet: other devices and uploads compete for available upload capacity. Pause nonessential uploads or choose a lower stream bitrate that leaves more room.
- The configured bitrate is close to the measured upload speed: there may be too little spare capacity for fluctuations. Lower the bitrate or use a connection with more sustained upload capacity; for Twitch, its stated rule of thumb is bitrate plus 30%.
- The stream is unstable at a high resolution or frame rate: a higher-quality setting can exceed the limits of the connection or computer. Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again.
- The number you are comparing is for a different codec or platform: bitrate recommendations are not interchangeable. Match platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec before using a figure, and distinguish encoder bitrate from upload speed.
