For a church streaming in H.264, plan for about 9.6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, or 12 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those figures apply YouTube’s recommended 20% network headroom to its recommended encoder bitrates; they are planning targets, not guaranteed minimums or a promise that a connection will stay online around the clock. Your actual need depends on the encoder bitrate, other traffic sharing the connection, and how reliably the connection performs at the church.
How much upload speed does the stream need?
The relevant figure is the encoder’s outgoing bitrate, not the number of viewers watching. YouTube receives the church’s stream and transcodes it for playback; the encoder must continuously send its video and audio to YouTube. Use the upload direction of the connection, not its download speed.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists the following H.264 bitrates. The upload targets below multiply the recommended bitrate by 1.2 to apply YouTube’s recommended 20% network headroom.

Bitrate figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings; the 20% allowance follows YouTube Help’s streaming tips (accessed October 3, 2026). The headroom figures are arithmetic planning targets, not additional YouTube minimums. A connection that only reaches the target occasionally may still be unsuitable for a continuous stream.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough?
It may be adequate for some settings, but it is not a universal answer. Ten Mbps matches YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps before adding the recommended 20% headroom; the corresponding planning target is about 12 Mbps. It also exceeds the 8 Mbps recommended bitrate for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, but leaves less room than the 9.6 Mbps target. Judge the sustained upload capacity actually available to the encoder against your chosen bitrate and headroom.
How to size and test the church connection
- Choose the stream format. Decide resolution, frame rate and codec first. YouTube’s recommended bitrate changes with those settings, so do not select an internet plan using a generic Mbps figure alone. The figures above are for H.264.
- Set the encoder bitrate and allow headroom. Use the bitrate appropriate to the format, then plan for at least 20% additional upload capacity. If more than one outgoing stream is being sent, add their bitrates together before applying headroom. YouTube advises considering the primary stream, any backup stream and network headroom.
- Measure upload capacity where the encoder will run. Test the actual church connection and repeat at times when the network is normally busy. A marketed or speed-test result does not show how much bandwidth will remain available to the streaming computer when staff, worship teams or other devices are using the network.
- Use wired Ethernet when streaming from a computer. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend a wired connection for computer streaming. Wi-Fi performance can vary with distance, interference and other devices.
- Rehearse and monitor. Run an unlisted rehearsal with representative movement, camera changes and audio. Check YouTube’s stream health during the rehearsal and live broadcast. YouTube also provides live filming tips for planning and checking a broadcast.
What matters for a 24/7 stream in India?
A 24/7 broadcast needs more than a speed test that briefly reaches the target. The church needs sufficient upload capacity continuously, including during normal shared-network use, and a connection whose performance and interruptions have been observed over time. A higher headline speed does not by itself establish reliability or guarantee uninterrupted streaming.

Compare services available at the church’s specific location by sustained measured upload speed against the selected bitrate plus headroom, interruptions during long-duration tests, how much the connection is shared with other church activity, and the support or recovery options available. Does the number of people watching change the church’s required upload speed?
No. The encoder sends its outgoing stream to YouTube; viewer count does not set that outgoing bitrate.

Can a speed test prove a stream will stay live for 24 hours?
No. A speed test is a snapshot and cannot establish continuous capacity or guarantee against interruptions.
