A coding agent can produce an Android layout that looks like a screen, but a layout alone does not supply the window that displays it, the lifecycle that hosts it, the data wiring for a changing list, or the behavior of any overlay. In my project, getting from a rendered layout to a usable screen meant connecting those pieces. That is one implementation story, not a rule that every Android app needs an Activity, Fragment, RecyclerView, and system overlay.

Why a rendered layout is not yet a complete screen

A layout describes views and their arrangement. A working screen also needs an Android component to host that UI and, depending on what the screen does, code to manage its content and interactions. Android’s Activity guide describes an Activity as the window in which an app draws its UI. The Activity participates in the app lifecycle; it is not simply another visual element in the layout.

That distinction explains why an agent can produce something that looks plausible in a preview or in generated files without having established that the app launches, that the screen is hosted correctly, or that its data and interactions work. The account here is about the components needed in one project. It does not establish that the agent ran the app or passed tests, and it should not be read as a platform-wide recipe.

What each Android component contributes

Activity: the window-level host

An Activity represents a window and owns a lifecycle through which Android communicates events such as creation and visibility changes. Activities are declared in the app manifest. Essential screen setup, view creation, and related initialization commonly happen in an appropriate lifecycle callback such as onCreate(); the exact work depends on the app architecture.

An Activity and a Fragment are not interchangeable. The Activity provides the window-level host, while a Fragment supplies a portion of UI inside a host.

Fragment: a hosted portion of UI

A Fragment represents a reusable portion of an app’s interface and manages its own layout, lifecycle, and input events. It cannot stand alone: an Activity or another Fragment must host it. For AndroidX Fragments hosted in an Activity, Android recommends placing the Fragment in a FragmentContainerView. See the Fragments overview and Create a fragment.

A Fragment can be useful when a screen or part of a screen needs a distinct, reusable UI unit. It is not automatically required just because an app has more than one screen; the architecture should justify the extra component.

RecyclerView: repeated, data-backed content

RecyclerView is a view in the layout for displaying repeated items. Its adapter supplies and binds item data to view holders, and the component can reuse item views that scroll off screen. That makes it a useful choice for a changing or sizeable list, not a prerequisite for every screen. A short, fixed arrangement may not need a RecyclerView at all. Android’s RecyclerView guide explains the adapter, view-holder, and list roles.

For a real list, the important work is more than adding the view: the app must provide the data, describe how each item is displayed, and update the list when its contents change. The documentation does not justify a universal performance percentage; results depend on the application and its devices.

Overlay: first identify which kind

“Overlay” can mean two materially different things. A dialog or popup drawn within the app’s own UI is in-app interface. A window using TYPE_APPLICATION_OVERLAY is a system-level application overlay that appears above Activity windows and below critical system windows. It requires SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW, and Android may change its position, size, or visibility. The behavior is documented in the WindowManager.LayoutParams reference.

So the word alone is not enough to determine what a screen needs. If the element only appears over the app’s content, describe and implement it as in-app UI. If it must appear above other apps, it is a separate, permission-gated window with system-managed behavior. Do not treat the two as synonyms.

How to decide whether this stack fits your screen

  • Choose the host architecture first. If the app uses the Views-based approach in this example, an Activity can host the window and a Fragment can provide a distinct UI portion. A Fragment is optional when the Activity’s own UI is sufficient.
  • Add RecyclerView for repeated data. Use it when the screen needs a data-driven list whose items can change or extend. A static layout does not need it merely to qualify as a complete screen.
  • Define “overlay” before implementing one. Decide whether the element stays inside the app window or must appear above other apps; only the latter invokes application-overlay permissions and system management.
  • Check the UI framework and target behavior. Android’s current guidance also supports a single-Activity approach with Jetpack APIs, including Compose. The Activity–Fragment–RecyclerView combination is one valid views-based design, not the only modern Android architecture. See the Activity embedding guide.

Account for edge-to-edge layout and system insets

Starting with Android 15 (API level 35), edge-to-edge is the default starting point for app layout. Content can extend into areas occupied by system UI, so a screen should not assume that the status and navigation bars automatically reserve space. Insets describe intersections with system bars, display cutouts, and the on-screen keyboard; handle them so important content and touch targets remain usable. Android’s window insets guide covers this behavior.

This concern applies whether a screen is built with one host or several UI components: the final layout needs to account for the window it occupies and the system UI around it.

What the coding-agent example does—and does not—show

The useful lesson is the difference between producing a visual layout and integrating a screen into an app. In the project described here, the layout was only one part of the work; the host, UI organization, list behavior, and overlay requirements also mattered. Which pieces are necessary depends on what the screen actually does.

Nothing about a rendered layout alone demonstrates that an agent launched the application, verified lifecycle behavior, checked edge-to-edge insets, or tested interactions. Those are separate outcomes that require evidence from the project, such as source code, a recording, or test output. The implementation should be judged by whether its components serve the screen’s requirements—not by whether it includes a particular list of Android classes.
