If you need more support than your current wireless bra provides, choose a bra for the job: for exercise, try a high-support sports bra matched to your activity; for everyday wear, consider a well-fitting underwire bra if you are comfortable wearing one. Underwire is not required for support, and a wireless bra or bralette may still work if it fits well.
Choose by activity, not by whether a bra has wire
For sport, support means limiting breast movement during activity. Running and jumping may call for more support than walking, and the right choice depends on the movement, fit, and your comfort. Sports Medicine Australia explains that sports bras use different constructions to manage movement; no single design is established as best for everyone. Sports Medicine Australia’s exercise and breast-support guidance recommends assessing support during the activity itself.
For daily wear, an underwire bra is one option if you want its structure and are comfortable with wire. Breast Cancer Now notes that wired bras can provide extra support, but choosing one is personal. Unwired bras and bralettes can also provide some support when they fit properly. These are broad construction types, not a ranking. Compare how securely a style contains you and how comfortable it feels while you move. If you need high support, some people may find that wearing an encapsulation bra with a crop top over it helps; this is a sport-specific option, not a universal solution for everyday wear.

Check fit before deciding the bra is supportive enough
A bra can have a supportive design and still fail to support you if it does not fit. Try it with movements you will make during your workout, and notice both movement and discomfort.
- Band: It should feel firm, sit level, and stay in place when you raise your arms.
- Cups: They should contain all breast tissue without gaps or bulging.
- Straps: They should feel secure without slipping or digging into your shoulders.
- Underwire, if present: It should follow the breast crease and rest against the breastbone or ribs, not dig into breast tissue.
For an everyday bra, also check that the center lies flat against your chest. If a bra needs frequent adjusting, straps keep slipping, or you notice red marks, reassess the fit rather than assuming you need a different bra category. Breast size and shape can change with life stages and weight changes, so consider a new fitting or measurements when your body changes. Trying different sizes and styles can help if a fit remains difficult.

When underwire may not be appropriate
Underwire is optional, not a requirement for support. Sports Medicine Australia advises against underwire for contact, collision, or combat sports because of injury risk, and for breastfeeding because localized pressure may block milk ducts. These are specific cautions, not a general reason to avoid underwire. Breast Cancer Now says bra fit does not affect breast cancer risk.

The Australian Sports Commission displays figures stating that nearly 9 in 10 teenagers wear an ill-fitting bra during sport, around 7 in 10 women experience breast pain when exercising, and properly fitted sports bras can reduce breast movement by nearly 60%. The surfaced page does not state the year or identify the underlying study for these figures, so they should be read as claims reported by the Commission, not as newly collected or independently validated statistics.
