Wear comfortable walking shoes you already know work for you, and dress in layers you can remove as the day warms up. Choose clothes for your local forecast and route, and check your event page for any specific attire rules or prohibited items. Pink is a visible theme at many walks, but the American Cancer Society does not state that it is required.
Start with comfortable shoes
Plan for the distance and surface of your event, and choose familiar footwear that feels comfortable for walking. American Cancer Society (ACS) Making Strides walks typically cover 2.5 to 5 miles, depending on the event and location, and an ACS checklist for its Point Pleasant Beach event recommends comfortable shoes. Those details are useful planning guidance, not a shoe-design or brand recommendation.
Check the local event page for route details so you can consider the terrain as well as the distance. If you need new walking shoes, choose them based on your own fit and comfort rather than assuming a particular model is best.
Dress for temperature changes and the forecast
An ACS Point Pleasant Beach checklist recommends dressing in layers because mornings may be cooler and temperatures may rise as the day progresses. Check the local forecast close to event day and bring an easy-to-remove layer so you can adjust.

For its 2026 event listing, Miami event organizer Split Second Timing suggests a hat, sunscreen, and clothing appropriate for the weather and walk. Treat that as advice for that event, not a universal rule for every Making Strides walk or charity event. For an outdoor walk, a hat and sunscreen may be useful when conditions call for them.
Pink is optional, not a stated dress code
ACS event imagery shows participants wearing pink shirts, hats, and celebratory outfits, and the organization links to official merchandise. The sources do not say that pink or branded apparel is required. Wear pink if you want to join the theme; otherwise, choose comfortable clothing suited to the weather and walk.

Check your event’s local rules
Breast cancer charity walks are not all governed by the same event rules. ACS local pages can include requirements or restrictions specific to a particular location. For example, one local ACS FAQ says shirts, shorts or pants, and shoes must be worn at all times and lists prohibited items; that is not a nationwide policy.
