Watch how the offense adapts to the quarterback who is playing: its play selection, use of the run game, pass protection, and pace. Then see how the defense responds. These are clues to the team’s plan in that particular game—not a guarantee of a run-heavy offense, predictable play-calling, or a loss.
Start with the play calls
A team may adjust its plan to suit the replacement while keeping its usual offensive system. In a historical interview, then–New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said the team would tailor its plan to the quarterback playing, and try to give a less experienced player plays he could execute without unnecessary mental burden. That describes one coach’s approach, not a rule every team follows. Read Shurmur’s comments in the Giants interview.
As you watch, compare the calls with what the offense has shown earlier in the game or season. Is it still using familiar concepts, or does it appear to emphasize plays suited to the replacement? A change in play selection may reflect the quarterback’s strengths, but it can also reflect the score, time remaining, or down-and-distance.

Notice how the team uses the quarterback’s mobility
A replacement’s running ability can influence which plays a team chooses. In September 2021, then–Houston Texans head coach David Culley said the team would keep its playbook but use plays that fit Davis Mills more than it had used with Tyrod Taylor, including different run-game choices. Look for whether the quarterback keeps the ball on designed runs or whether the offense relies more on its other ball carriers. Either pattern can be a deliberate fit for the player and situation; the backup label alone does not tell you what the team will call.
Watch the protection and supporting offense
Pass protection matters when a quarterback is adjusting to a starting role. The NFL describes offensive tackles as protecting the quarterback on passing plays and helping create running lanes on rushing plays. See the NFL Football Operations glossary.

Notice whether the quarterback has time to make a throw and whether the offense can gain enough on the ground to avoid repeatedly facing obvious passing situations. Treat that as a way to read the game, not a guarantee that a particular protection or run call will succeed.
Read the defense’s response and the game’s pace
Watch for changes in defensive personnel or alignment as the offense changes its play pattern. Neither side has one required response to a backup quarterback, so focus on what the defense actually does rather than assuming it will respond in a fixed way.

Also notice whether the offense uses no-huddle tempo. The NFL glossary defines no-huddle as lining up without a huddle to conserve time or catch the defense off guard and prevent substitutions. Tempo is one clue to the team’s approach; it does not by itself reveal why the coach chose it.
Keep the game situation in view
Score, time remaining, and down-and-distance shape what either team can reasonably call. A team protecting a lead may approach a drive differently from one that needs to score quickly, whether its starter or a replacement is at quarterback. Compare play choices with the situation instead of attributing every change to the quarterback’s absence.

Know the NFL emergency-quarterback rule
In the NFL, a designated emergency third quarterback may enter only if both active quarterbacks are unavailable because of injury or disqualification. A coach benching a quarterback for poor play does not make the emergency player eligible. An injured quarterback who is cleared may return. For any particular game, check the current injury report, starter announcement, and rules that apply to that league. The NFL rule should not be assumed to apply to other levels or competitions.

What not to assume
- A missing starter does not automatically mean the offense will become run-heavy or predictable.
- The backup designation alone does not establish the replacement’s mobility, experience, or fit with the system.
