A self-hosted photo library is one alternative: Synology Photos runs on a Synology NAS, so your photos live on hardware you own rather than only in a cloud subscription. The app is free, but the NAS costs money and you take responsibility for setup, maintenance, and a separate backup. That trade-off suits people who value control and are willing to manage their own storage; it is not automatically cheaper or easier than a cloud service.

What can replace Google Photos, iCloud Photos, or Dropbox?

One documented option is Synology Photos, a photo library service that requires a Synology NAS. Synology describes the app as free, with a one-off hardware investment and no subscription tier. The NAS stores the library; Synology Photos provides tools to browse, manage, share, search, upload, and organize photos into albums.

This is a different cost and responsibility model from paying a cloud provider to host your photo library. You supply and maintain the storage, and you decide how to make an independent backup. The service is therefore a better fit for people who prioritize local control and accept more setup and upkeep—not a universal replacement for the convenience of cloud storage.

What you gain—and what you take on

Factor Synology Photos on a NAS Cloud photo or file service
Cost Synology says the app is free and requires a one-off Synology NAS hardware investment. Your full cost also depends on storage, electricity, replacement drives, backup arrangements, and maintenance time. Subscription and storage costs vary by service and plan; no comparable prices are established here.
Setup and upkeep You configure and maintain the NAS and its storage. The provider operates its hosting infrastructure; account and service settings remain your responsibility.
Control and access You control the storage hardware and backup choices, and must ensure the NAS and remote access are configured appropriately. Your library is hosted under the provider’s service and account terms.
Backup responsibility You plan and verify an independent second copy; the NAS holding the main library is not that second copy. Do not assume that syncing or cloud storage alone meets your backup needs; check the service’s behavior and maintain any additional copies you need.
Mobile upload Synology documents iOS-specific conditions and caveats. Immich, another self-hosted option, also relies on mobile operating-system background behavior. Upload behavior depends on the service and mobile platform; no side-by-side behavior comparison is established here.
Features and hardware Includes browsing, management, sharing, search, upload, and album workflows. Face and object recognition depend on NAS model compatibility. Features vary by provider and plan; no direct feature-by-feature comparison is established here.

Synology does not establish a savings amount or payback period. A fair comparison needs your required storage capacity, current hardware prices, electricity use, drive replacements, backup costs, and the value you place on your time. “No subscription” describes the app’s cost model; it does not mean the complete system is free.

How to make a NAS photo library safer

Treat the NAS as the primary library, not as a complete backup plan. Synology describes backing up phone photos to the NAS, uploading extra copies of the library remotely, and backing up the NAS to other locations. Keep at least one independent copy that would remain available if the NAS or its drives failed, and check that you can restore files from it.

  1. Check the NAS model before buying. Confirm that it supports the Synology Photos features you need, especially face and object recognition, in Synology’s technical specifications.
  2. Set up phone uploads. Install Synology Photos and configure its mobile backup for the folders and account you intend to use. On iOS, Synology recommends enabling notifications and keeping the device charging to improve backup efficiency.
  3. Plan for iOS sync delays. Synology warns that when iOS devices share iCloud storage, delayed syncing between devices may mean some photos are not backed up. Check the NAS library rather than assuming every item has arrived.
  4. Create a second copy outside the NAS. Use a separate destination or location, and verify that the backup includes the photos you expect. A second copy on the same NAS does not protect against loss of that NAS.
  5. Test recovery. Restore a small selection of files from the independent copy so you know the process works before you need it.

What about Immich?

Immich is another self-hosted photo-library option, but its mobile backup also depends on the phone’s operating system. Its mobile-backup documentation says iOS requires Background App Refresh and that iOS decides when background jobs run. It describes periodic background uploads and Wi-Fi defaults. Those constraints mean neither NAS-hosted nor self-hosted mobile backup should be treated as guaranteed to run immediately in the background.

Who should choose self-hosted photos?

  • Consider a NAS library if you want control over where your primary library is stored, already accept managing home-network hardware, and are prepared to maintain a separate backup.
  • Prefer a hosted service if avoiding hardware setup and ongoing storage maintenance matters more to you than controlling the storage infrastructure.
  • Compare the full cost and workflow if you are deciding primarily to save money: include hardware, storage expansion, power, replacements, backup, setup time, and the effort required to migrate and keep phones uploading reliably.
