Serve Steak Diane with potatoes and a fresh vegetable or salad. Fries make a crisp, steakhouse-style plate; sautéed, boiled or smashed potatoes—and rice—are good choices when you want something to catch the savory pan sauce. Add a crisp salad or vegetables for a fresh counterpoint. The recipes show several workable pairings, not one required side.

Choose a side by the texture you want

Steak Diane is served with a rich pan sauce, so a useful plate combines a starch with something fresh. Pick the potato or rice option that suits your meal, then add salad or vegetables if you want more contrast.

Side What it adds Recipe example
Fries or pomme frites A crisp, familiar steakhouse contrast. Le Creuset’s recipe, credited to chef Ludo Lefebvre, serves Steak Diane with pomme frites and describes French fries as a typical pairing: Steak Diane and Pomme Frites.
Sauté potatoes Golden potatoes without making fries the centerpiece. The Hairy Bikers’ BBC Food recipe serves the steak with sauté potatoes and a crisp mixed salad: Steak Diane with sauté potatoes.
Boiled or smashed potatoes A soft side that can take up the sauce. The Washington Post recipe recommends boiled or smashed potatoes to capture the sauce: Steak Diane.
Rice A straightforward sauce-catching alternative to potatoes. The Washington Post recipe also suggests rice alongside the steak.
Salad or vegetables Freshness and a contrast to the sauce and starch. BBC Food pairs its steak with crisp mixed salad. Another BBC Food version uses roasted vegetables and offers roasted new potatoes as an option: Steak Diane.

Build a balanced plate

  1. Choose one starch. Pick fries for crunch, sauté potatoes for a golden finish, or boiled or smashed potatoes or rice to catch the sauce.
  2. Add something fresh. A crisp mixed salad is a direct match from the Hairy Bikers’ recipe. Roasted vegetables are another option if you prefer a warm side.
  3. Serve the sauce with the steak. Spoon it over the warm steaks, as the BBC Food recipe directs, and let the starch take up any sauce on the plate.

Easy variations

For a classic steakhouse feel, serve fries with a salad. For a more relaxed plate, choose smashed potatoes and vegetables. Rice works when you want a simple starch without preparing potatoes. These are menu choices rather than fixed rules: recipes vary, and a vintage Steak Diane recipe reproduced by Disney Parks Blog lists no side at all. Disney Parks Blog’s Lake Buena Vista Club recipe documents that version, not a standard side pairing.

A note if you are also cooking the steak

Steak doneness preference and food safety are separate considerations. Publix’s Steak Diane recipe attributes a recommendation of 145°F measured with a food thermometer, followed by a three-minute rest, to USDA guidance; it distinguishes that from lower temperatures shown for traditional medium-rare and medium preparations. See Publix’s recipe and safety note.
