If you want another manga after Tokyo Ghoul and Choujin X, start with Dorohedoro for grotesque supernatural fantasy and violent conflict. If you have only finished Tokyo Ghoul, read Choujin X next: it is also by Sui Ishida. For a story centered specifically on ghosts, try Dark Gathering.
Which manga should you read next?
| If you want… | Try… | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Grotesque supernatural fantasy, violent conflict, and an eccentric world | Dorohedoro | VIZ’s premise features sorcerers experimenting on people, a reptile-headed man with amnesia, and conflict between two worlds. Read VIZ’s Dorohedoro series page. |
| Another series by Sui Ishida | Choujin X, if unread | VIZ identifies Ishida as its creator and describes the series as a blend of dark humor and quirky horror. See VIZ’s Choujin X page. |
| Ghost-centered supernatural horror | Dark Gathering | Its premise follows an unwilling supernatural magnet and a girl who captures frightening ghosts and ghouls. Read VIZ’s Dark Gathering page. |
| More possibilities from the publisher’s recommendation modules | Gangsta., Jujutsu Kaisen, Monster, or Blue Exorcist | VIZ displays these among recommendations on its Choujin X and Tokyo Ghoul pages. The modules do not explain their selection criteria, so treat them as discovery suggestions rather than a ranked list of similar manga. See the Choujin X page and the Tokyo Ghoul page. |
Why Dorohedoro is the strongest alternative
Dorohedoro is the clearest pick here if what you want is a grotesque supernatural setting and a premise built around transformation and violence. VIZ describes a world where sorcerers experiment on people, including a man left with a reptile’s head and no memory of his past. The story also involves conflict between two worlds.

That makes it a thematic match for readers drawn to disturbing supernatural conflict, but not a promise that it recreates Ishida’s style or the specific ghoul premise of Tokyo Ghoul. VIZ lists Dorohedoro, Vol. 1 as the series debut and offers reading and purchase options on its page; local availability and retailer terms can vary.
Read Choujin X if you have only finished Tokyo Ghoul
If you have not read Choujin X, it is the direct choice for creator continuity: Sui Ishida created both series. VIZ calls it a tale where “Dark humor and quirky horror unite,” a useful indication that it is not simply another version of Tokyo Ghoul. Its page lists volumes, including Choujin X, Vol. 1, along with reading or purchase options.
#1 Best Overall
- This product will be an excellent pick for you
- Easy to maintain
- This product comes in a proper packaging
Shueisha’s MANGA Plus also frames Choujin X as superpowered battle action and summarizes Tokyo Ghoul through its human-ghoul premise. Those broad descriptions help distinguish the series, but they do not establish a similarity ranking. See MANGA Plus.
Choose Dark Gathering for ghost-focused horror
Dark Gathering is the most specifically ghost-centered option in this group. VIZ describes a reluctant supernatural magnet and a young girl who hunts ghosts. Choose it if eerie encounters and ghost-hunting appeal more than a direct parallel to ghouls, choujin, or body transformation.

How to choose among these recommendations
- For a strange, grotesque fantasy world: Pick Dorohedoro.
- For more work by Ishida: Pick Choujin X if it is still unread.
- For ghosts and supernatural horror: Pick Dark Gathering.
- For more publisher-curated discovery: Browse the recommendations on VIZ’s Tokyo Ghoul and Choujin X pages, keeping in mind that VIZ does not state how those suggestions are ranked.
These titles differ in premise and style. Use tone—bleak, comic, or eccentric—alongside supernatural subject matter and action emphasis to decide what you want next; none should be treated as an exact substitute for the two reference series.
If you still need to catch up
VIZ’s Tokyo Ghoul page lists individual volumes and complete box sets for both the original series and Tokyo Ghoul:re. Check the page for current reading or purchase options before choosing an edition.
