Before ordering a handmade cloth diaper on Etsy, confirm its construction, fit measurements, fabric and absorbent layers, included inserts, cover requirements, care instructions, and return and shipping terms. Treat material, sizing, absorbency, and certification details as claims from the individual seller—not as quality checks performed by Etsy—and message the seller about anything the listing leaves unclear.
Start with the diaper’s construction
“Cloth diaper” covers different designs. Identify the style first, because it affects how the diaper fits, where absorbency comes from, and whether you need a separate waterproof cover. The terms below describe constructions in the listings reviewed; sellers may use terms differently, so check the specific listing.

Do not infer that an item is waterproof just because it is a diaper. Ask whether its outer layer contains a waterproof material and whether an additional cover is needed.
Check fit with measurements, not just “one size”
A “one-size” label does not tell you how a particular diaper will fit your baby. Look for a weight range and actual finished measurements, including rise, waist, and leg openings. Also check the adjustment method—such as snaps or another closure—and whether the listing explains how to change the fit.

One KINGSofmyCASTLE fitted listing accessed in 2026 describes its diaper as approximately 4–15 kg. That is one seller’s product specification, not an Etsy-wide sizing standard or a guarantee of fit for every baby in that range. A sampled preflat listing instead offers several sizes and notes that hand-cutting can result in cut variations.
If the listing does not provide enough information to judge fit, message the seller before ordering. Ask for the finished waist, rise, and leg-opening measurements, and what fit range the exact pattern has been used for. A seller’s stated range is useful context, but it is not independent evidence of fit or a promise about your child’s experience.

Verify fibers, layers, and certification wording
Read the material details for each part of the diaper rather than relying on a title, a material filter, or a broad label such as “bamboo” or “organic.” The shell, soaker, booster, insert, elastic, snaps, and any waterproof outer material may use different components. Check both fiber composition and the number and arrangement of absorbent layers.

If a listing names a certification, ask what it covers: the fiber, fabric, a particular component, or the finished diaper. Request the certificate or its scope if that distinction matters to your purchase. Do not treat certification language in a listing as independently confirmed unless you have evidence covering the product component you care about.
Work out what provides absorbency—and what is included
Look for the insert count, dimensions, fiber composition, layer count, and how the absorbent pieces are positioned. An insert may be sewn into the diaper, placed in a pocket, laid against the diaper, or sold separately. The listing should make clear what arrives in the order; if it does not, ask before checkout.

For example, a KINGSofmyCASTLE insert listing accessed in 2026 describes a three-layer bamboo/organic-cotton insert in two sizes: 32 × 12 cm and 39 × 12 cm. The seller describes the inserts as boosters and says one or two can extend absorption. Those are seller-provided product details, not independent absorbency test results. Another sampled fitted listing includes two bamboo inserts, while a Greenchild Creations fitted/pocket listing says inserts are not included and that its pocket accepts a variety of inserts.
If you are buying separate reusable cloth diaper inserts, compare their dimensions and construction with the diaper’s pocket or absorbent area. Ask whether the intended inserts are included, whether your existing inserts are compatible, and how the seller recommends placing them. A seller’s estimate of absorbency cannot establish how long a diaper will last for an individual baby; the sampled pocket listing itself notes that needs depend on age and wetting habits.

Confirm whether you need a separate cover
Some constructions need an outer waterproof layer to contain moisture. The sampled fitted and preflat listings both call for a cover or say the cloth is designed to be worn under one, but that does not establish a rule for every handmade diaper style. Check the specific listing for a clear answer: is a cover included, required, optional, or unnecessary because the diaper has its own waterproof outer layer?
If a separate cover is required, ask the seller what construction and sizing to use with that diaper. Do not order a cover based only on the diaper’s advertised weight range if the listing does not explain how the two items are intended to work together.
Read care instructions and ask about shrinkage
Care directions vary by item. Review the seller’s wash and drying instructions before buying, especially if they differ from how you normally launder cloth diapers. Ask whether the item should be prewashed and whether the seller expects shrinkage. Follow the directions provided for the specific product rather than assuming that all fibers or construction methods have the same care needs.
Review Etsy’s handmade description and the order terms
Etsy’s Handmade category rules describe what sellers may list; they are not an individual quality inspection. Etsy says mass-produced resale is not allowed in Handmade, and its policy describes seller-made physical items as made by hand or with computerized tools. Where production partners apply, Etsy requires sellers to disclose them. These platform rules do not prove that a particular listing’s materials, construction, sizing, or performance claims have been independently checked.
Before placing an order, compare the listing’s dispatch timing, shipping origin and cost, estimated delivery, and return or exchange terms. Etsy says estimated delivery depends on carrier transit times, seller processing time, shipping history, and route, so it is an estimate rather than a guaranteed arrival date. For made-to-order items, check the stated lead time and whether returns are accepted; if returns are allowed, confirm who pays return shipping.
