Choose a power bank with a built-in cable by checking its rated capacity and Wh, matching the cable connector and charging output to your devices, and inspecting how the cable stores and reaches while in use. If you travel, check the Wh rating against current airline rules; if you buy, prefer a reputable seller and clear manufacturer specifications.

Compare capacity by rated output and watt-hours, not mAh alone

A power bank’s advertised mAh often describes its internal cells, not the amount available to a device at its USB output. Compare the cell-rated capacity with the manufacturer’s rated capacity at a stated output voltage and current, and check the Wh figure as well. Wh makes energy capacity easier to compare across products with different cell voltages and is the figure airlines commonly use.

For example, Xiaomi lists its Power Bank 10000 (Integrated Cable) 2027 with 10,000 mAh cell-rated capacity, 5,500 mAh rated capacity at 5V/3A, and 37 Wh. Those are the manufacturer’s specifications for that model, not independent measurements. When comparing other banks, look for the same kinds of detail rather than assuming that identical mAh labels mean identical usable charge.

Match the connector, charging protocol and output to your devices

First check that the built-in cable’s connector fits the device you want to charge. Connector shape alone does not guarantee fast charging: confirm that the power bank supports a protocol and output compatible with the phone, tablet or other device’s charging requirements. Check the maker’s specifications for both the bank and your device.

USB Power Delivery is one protocol to look for when relevant to your devices. The USB Implementers Forum says USB PD Revision 3.1 enables up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. That is the standard’s maximum capability, not an indication that a particular power bank—or its integrated cable—delivers that output. Use the product’s own listed output ratings when making a buying decision.

Inspect the built-in cable and other ports

An integrated cable saves you from carrying a separate lead, but its everyday usefulness depends on its design. Check these practical details before buying:

  • Reach: Consider whether the cable can comfortably reach your device when the bank is in a pocket, bag or on a desk.
  • Storage and protection: Look at how the cable tucks away and whether it is protected from snagging or strain while packed.
  • Other charging connections: Check whether the bank also has USB-C or USB-A ports for devices that need another connector or for charging more than one device.
  • Simultaneous output: If you expect to charge several devices at once, check the manufacturer’s stated output behavior with multiple connections in use.

For example, Xiaomi’s cited model combines an integrated USB-C cable with USB-C and USB-A ports. That illustrates one possible arrangement; it is not a comparative durability assessment. The available product information does not establish how long built-in cables from different models last, so inspect the design and warranty or support information rather than assuming an integrated cable is indestructible.

Balance portability with capacity

A larger capacity can mean more stored energy, but the bank’s physical size and weight affect whether you will actually want to carry it. Compare dimensions and weight alongside Wh, rated output capacity and charging compatibility. A compact bank that meets your device and travel needs may be more practical than a higher-capacity model that is inconvenient to bring along.

Check Wh and airline rules before flying

For flights covered by its passenger guidance, the Federal Aviation Administration says spare power banks must be carried in cabin baggage. Batteries rated 0–100 Wh are allowed under that guidance; batteries rated 101–160 Wh require carrier approval. Airlines may set stricter limits, so check the current rules for your carrier and route before travel. See the FAA passenger guidance for lithium batteries.

The Wh rating should be marked on the battery. If you need to calculate it, the FAA says to multiply voltage by amp-hours. Do not assume that a mAh figure alone tells you whether a bank meets a travel threshold; use the product’s Wh rating and confirm any airline-specific requirements. IATA also advises travelers to check airline rules, especially for batteries over 100 Wh (IATA lithium-battery guidance).

EASA advises checking the airline’s dangerous-goods information and says power banks should not be connected to or providing power to a device on board an aircraft (EASA dangerous-goods guidance). Follow the current instructions for your flight.

Buy from a reputable supplier and check safety information

Prefer a reputable seller and a product listing that clearly identifies the model and its ratings. Consult the manufacturer’s charging instructions and compatibility information, and look for applicable safety or recall notices. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission advises buying from a reputable supplier; its guidance also notes that Australia has no mandatory safety standard specifically for power banks containing rechargeable lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries. That regulatory point is specific to Australia, not a statement about requirements in other markets (ACCC power-bank guidance).

A quick buying checklist

  • Compare cell capacity, rated output capacity and Wh; note the output conditions attached to the rating.
  • Match the integrated cable connector to your device, then verify protocol support and output power.
  • Check cable reach, storage, protection and the number and type of additional ports.
  • Review simultaneous-charging specifications if you plan to power multiple devices.
  • Weigh capacity against size and weight, and check current airline rules before flying.
  • Choose a reputable seller and confirm the exact model, regional version, specifications and safety notices.
