The best overnight incontinence product is the one that matches the wearer’s output, mobility, toileting needs, body measurements and skin condition—not simply the one with the strongest absorbency claim. Compare briefs and pull-ups by function, check the product’s own sizing and leg fit, and treat absorbency as one part of a broader decision. Even a high-capacity product does not remove the need to respond to soiling or skin problems.
Choose a style that fits how the wearer moves and changes
Tabbed briefs and pull-ups are different designs, and neither is best for everyone. Consider whether the wearer can walk to the toilet, manage clothing and change independently, or needs another person’s help. Mobility, toileting ability, severity of incontinence and need for assistance all affect the practical choice.
Tabbed briefs
A tabbed brief can be put on or adjusted without pulling it up over the legs, which may be useful for someone with limited mobility or who needs help changing. For some people with moderate to heavy nighttime incontinence, a Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) consensus recommends disposable briefs incorporating superabsorbent polymer. This is a selection consideration, not a guarantee that a brief will prevent leaks for a particular wearer. Read the WOCN consensus.

Pull-ups or close-fitting underwear with integral pads may suit some people who can toilet themselves and prefer underwear-style garments. Consider how easily the wearer can pull the product on and off, especially during nighttime bathroom trips. Manufacturer descriptions of a product as “overnight” indicate its intended use, not independent proof that it is right for every person.

Match absorbency to actual overnight output
Compare the product’s stated absorbency or intended use with the wearer’s typical urine or stool output. Terms such as “maximum” or “overnight” do not establish universal suitability, and absorbency alone cannot promise a leak-free night. Published performance measures include acquisition rate (how quickly fluid is taken in), rewet (how much moisture returns toward the surface), retention capacity and absorbency. WOCN notes that further research is needed to establish how laboratory measures relate to clinical outcomes. The National Association for Continence (NAFC) performance standards paper describes recommended test parameters for medium adult products; these figures are testing benchmarks, not proof of overnight performance.
| NAFC council recommended parameter | Briefs | Underwear | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum rewet rate | <1.0–2.0 g | <0.5–1.0 g | Recommended test range described in the 2013 paper abstract; not a product-specific result. |
| Maximum rate of acquisition | <50–60 seconds | <35–45 seconds | Recommended test range described in the 2013 paper abstract; not a prediction of leak prevention. |
| Minimum retention capacity | >250 g standard; >400 g premium | >250 g standard; >400 g premium | Recommended minimums described in the 2013 paper abstract. |
| Breathability of zones | Minimum >100 cubic feet per minute | Minimum >100 cubic feet per minute | Recommended parameter described in the 2013 paper abstract. |
The abstract explains that these are recommended parameters for medium adult products; they should not be read as a guarantee that an individual product will prevent nighttime leakage or skin irritation. WOCN says the clinical relevance of performance measures needs further research. NAFC paper abstract; WOCN consensus.

Check size, placement and seals—not just the absorbent core
Use the waist or hip range on the specific product’s packaging or size chart. A snug, comfortable fit helps the leg and waist areas sit in the intended position. Check that the absorbent area is placed where it is needed and that the leg openings and waist lie flat rather than gaping or digging in. Increasing pad size does not increase its absorbency, advises Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust; a product that is too large may also fit poorly. Mersey Care’s fitting advice.
For one product-specific example, TENA’s Canadian page lists hip ranges of 84–132 cm for M/R and 104–163 cm for L/XL for its ProSkin Stretch Night tabbed brief. Those ranges apply to that product and market; they are not standard sizes for all brands or styles. Check TENA’s product page and the chart for the product you are considering.

Consider skin comfort and when to change
Skin comfort depends on more than absorbency. WOCN advises considering fit, comfort and skin barrier function along with size, absorbent-area placement, elastic features, breathability, pressure-related features and friction. A feature in a product description should not be treated as proof that it independently prevents dermatitis. The consensus puts the principle plainly: “Consider fit, comfort, and skin barrier function when selecting body-worn absorptive products.” WOCN consensus.
There is no single change interval that suits every wearer. WOCN says timing should take skin health, odor, sleep, elimination patterns, dignity and the product’s properties into account. Change the product as soon as possible after a fecal episode. If redness persists or skin is damaged, ask a clinician for advice tailored to the wearer rather than relying on a product claim or changing absorbency alone.

Use boosters and bed pads for their distinct roles
For high-volume urine output, WOCN advises considering a booster pad as an adjunct to a brief or pull-up; it may help containment and potentially reduce sleep interruption. Check that the booster is intended to work with the base garment and follow both products’ instructions. An insert that is not compatible may not function as intended.

Compare product claims carefully
Manufacturers provide examples of products marketed for nighttime use. TENA’s Canadian listing describes ProSkin Stretch Night as a tabbed brief with stretch sides and product-specific hip sizing. Attends describes Sleep Comfort premium protective underwear as intended for extended nighttime protection. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative performance findings or a determination of individual suitability. TENA product details; Attends product information.
When comparing any brand, check its size chart, absorbency description, instructions for use, style and features against the wearer’s needs. If leakage continues despite a comfortable, correctly sized product appropriate to the output, review the fit and product type and ask a continence or healthcare professional for individual guidance.
