For a Home Assistant weather station, start with how its integration gets data: Ecowitt offers local push, WeatherFlow Tempest is local-only over UDP, while the built-in Ambient Weather Station and Netatmo integrations depend on vendor clouds. Then verify the exact gateway and sensors, the measurements you need, and whether your network can support the setup.
Check how the station connects to Home Assistant
“Works with Home Assistant” can mean local communication or a connection mediated by a vendor’s cloud. That difference affects internet and account dependence, network setup, and what happens when a service is unavailable. Compare the integration path—not just the station brand.
| Option | Home Assistant connection | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ecowitt | Local Push: the station uploads readings to a callback on your Home Assistant instance. | Configure the upload destination and make an HTTP route reachable from the station. Ecowitt devices do not support HTTPS for these uploads. Home Assistant Ecowitt documentation |
| WeatherFlow Tempest | Local-only integration using UDP to read compatible devices on the local network. | Make sure the station and Home Assistant can communicate on your local network. Values can differ from the WeatherFlow app, which also incorporates forecasts and neighboring stations. Home Assistant WeatherFlow documentation |
| Ambient Weather Station | The built-in integration communicates through Ambient Weather Cloud. | Setup requires an Application Key and API Key. Home Assistant also identifies ecowitt2mqtt in ambient_weather mode as a local option. Home Assistant Ambient Weather Station documentation |
| Netatmo | The integration communicates with Netatmo’s cloud service. | It requires a Netatmo account and an active internet connection. Home Assistant Netatmo documentation |
Confirm the exact gateway and sensor combination
A vendor name alone does not establish compatibility. Home Assistant’s Ecowitt documentation lists GW1200, GW2000, and GW3000 gateways, as well as WS90, WH40, WH51, and WH57 sensors, among devices reported to work. Check the live compatibility list and the precise package contents before buying: a retailer’s bundle may not include the gateway or sensor combination you expect. See the Ecowitt device list and setup instructions.

Match the sensors to the measurements you need
Decide which readings matter before comparing kits. Ecowitt documentation describes temperature, humidity, pressure, dew point, wind speed, gust and direction. Other measurements—such as rainfall, soil conditions, lightning, solar and UV—depend on optional sensors or the specific hardware attached. Do not assume that every station package includes every measurement.
- Rain: Check that the exact kit includes a rain sensor if rainfall totals matter.
- Wind: Confirm the hardware supports the wind readings you want, such as speed, gusts and direction.
- Garden or greenhouse monitoring: Look for compatible soil sensors and confirm whether they are included or sold separately.
- Sun and storm readings: Verify the presence of solar, UV or lightning sensors rather than inferring support from the brand.
Check whether your network supports the integration
Ecowitt: allow the station to reach Home Assistant over HTTP
The Ecowitt integration provides a callback host, path and port for the station to upload to. You can configure the upload through the Ecowitt app or the device’s web interface. The important constraint is that Ecowitt devices do not support HTTPS connections to Home Assistant. If your Home Assistant instance is HTTPS-only, you need an HTTP route the station can reach, such as a suitable reverse-proxy configuration. Review the official setup instructions before purchase if your network blocks non-secure HTTP. Ecowitt network and setup requirements.

WeatherFlow: keep the local network path available
WeatherFlow’s integration reads compatible Tempest devices on the local network using UDP. A cloud connection is not the integration path described by Home Assistant, so local network communication is the key setup consideration. WeatherFlow integration details.
Cloud integrations: account, keys and internet
For Ambient Weather’s built-in integration, plan on obtaining both an Application Key and API Key, and on communication through Ambient Weather Cloud. Netatmo requires an account and active internet access because Home Assistant communicates with its cloud service. If local operation is a priority, compare these requirements with Ecowitt or WeatherFlow before choosing. Ambient Weather requirements and Netatmo requirements.

Do not confuse Home Assistant’s Weather integration with a station
The generic Weather integration is a building block used by other integrations to provide weather conditions and related functionality. It is not the integration you add to connect a physical weather station. Follow the instructions for the specific station or provider integration instead.

- Choose local or cloud connectivity based on your preference for internet and account dependence.
- Confirm the exact gateway, station and sensor models against the relevant Home Assistant integration documentation.
- List the measurements you need and verify that the package includes the required sensors.
- Check that your network permits the integration’s traffic—especially HTTP reachability for Ecowitt or UDP communication for WeatherFlow.
- Review the current retailer listing for bundle contents, regional availability, warranty and price; these details are not established by Home Assistant’s integration documentation.
The available integration documentation establishes connection methods and examples of compatible hardware, not comparable accuracy, durability or reliability rankings. Use independent, comparable product testing if those qualities are deciding factors.
