Look for accessories that make your phone easier to hold, position, and use without forcing a tight pinch or difficult gesture. There is no established best case, stand, or stylus for everyone with arthritis or tremors, so judge each option against your hands, your phone, and the way you use it. Also check your phone’s built-in accessibility settings before buying anything.
How to choose accessories that fit your needs
Start with the task that is hardest: keeping a secure hold, steadying the phone, reaching the screen, or making precise taps. Try to address that task with the least effort and setup. A case or grip, stand, and stylus solve different problems; you may need one, several, or none.
- For holding: Check whether a case or grip feels secure without requiring a tight pinch, and whether its added bulk is manageable.
- For viewing and stability: Try placing the phone on a steady surface, then consider a stand if you want to change the viewing angle.
- For touch input: Consider whether a stylus is comfortable to hold and works with your phone’s screen.
- For difficult gestures or taps: Explore the accessibility options on your phone before assuming an accessory is the only solution.
These are practical criteria to test, not proof that one design works better for arthritis or tremor.

Choose based on how the phone feels in your hand, not just the case’s appearance or advertised grip features. If possible, try holding the phone with the case fitted. Notice whether you can pick it up and keep hold of it without squeezing hard or relying on a painful pinch.

- Comfortable hold: The case or grip should feel secure without demanding a sustained tight grip.
- Manageable bulk: Extra thickness or weight may change how easy the phone is to hold. Check the complete phone, not an accessory on its own.
- Usable controls: Make sure the case does not make buttons difficult to press or block ports you use.
- Fit for your exact phone: Check the phone model and whether the accessory is compatible with your existing case, if applicable.
There is no source-backed comparison showing that a particular case shape or grip style is best for arthritis or tremors. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association includes cases among possible augmentative and alternative communication accessories and recommends a team-based approach to accessory decisions. What kind of phone stand might help?
Try the simplest setup first: place the phone on a steady surface, such as a table, and adjust your posture and the phone’s position. A patient guide from Shirley Ryan AbilityLab says a steady surface and proper posture can make phone use easier and reduce the effect a tremor can have; it also notes that some people prefer a stand to adjust the phone’s angle. If you consider a stand, check that it supports your phone securely and lets you set a viewing angle that works for your posture and screen use. A stand is an option, not a treatment or a universal solution; a stable table may be enough. The cited guide does not evaluate particular stand models.
What to look for in a stylus
A stylus may change how you contact the screen, but it does not automatically make phone use easier. Test the grip’s comfort and the tip’s compatibility with your touchscreen. Conventional capacitive styluses rely on conductive contact with the screen, so a grip modification should not prevent that contact. - Grip diameter and feel: Check whether the stylus is comfortable to hold and easy to control without excessive squeezing.
- Screen compatibility: Confirm that the stylus works with your phone and touchscreen. A modified grip must still allow the stylus to make the required conductive contact if it is a conventional capacitive model.
- Phone or app capabilities: Some supported devices and apps offer stylus features such as palm and finger rejection, pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, and low latency. Android’s developer documentation describes these capabilities, but their availability depends on device and app support, and the features do not establish a clinical benefit for tremor. Check built-in accessibility settings, too
Phone settings may let you adjust interaction without adding hardware. Apple’s current iPhone mobility guide describes using spoken commands, assistive devices, an external keyboard, and other methods to navigate and interact. Apple describes AssistiveTouch as a way to adapt touchscreen use, replace difficult gestures, and connect pointer devices. Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide Labels and availability can change, so consult the guide and settings for your own iPhone software version. For another phone platform, check its current accessibility settings rather than assuming the same options or names apply.

When to ask for individual help
If it is hard to tell which accessory or setting will help, an occupational-therapy practitioner or assistive-technology professional can help assess options and support implementation and training.
