For a standard PS4, look for an HDMI monitor with a native 1080p panel. For PS4 Pro, a 4K/60Hz monitor can take advantage of supported 4K output; HDR10 is another option if you want HDR and your full HDMI signal chain supports it. In either case, check audio options and the exact HDMI input before buying.
What monitor should I get for PS4?
Start with your console model. A standard PS4 sends video over HDMI in supported modes up to 1080p, so a 1080p monitor is a sensible match. A higher-resolution monitor can accept and scale the signal, but that alone does not make standard PS4 games render at 4K.
PlayStation’s 2013 PS4 FAQ lists 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p as the console’s HDMI video standards. For PS4 Pro, PlayStation identifies 4K as an additional capability: selected games can output native 2160p, while enhanced upscaling can raise other game resolutions toward 4K. See its PS4 Pro 4K and HDR setup guidance and PS4 technical specifications.

| Console | Practical monitor target | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PS4 | HDMI, native 1080p | PS4 HDMI modes are listed up to 1080p by PlayStation; a 4K screen may scale the signal but does not confer native 4K game rendering. |
| PS4 Pro | HDMI, 4K/60Hz if you want Pro 4K output; HDR10 if HDR matters to you | Selected games can output native 2160p; other games may use enhanced upscaling. The signal chain and settings affect whether 4K and HDR work. |
Does PS4 support 4K?
Only PS4 Pro supports 4K output, according to PlayStation. Selected Pro games can output native 2160p; other games can use enhanced upscaling toward 4K. The standard PS4’s listed HDMI modes stop at 1080p, so choosing a 4K monitor for that console is an upgrade path for the display, not a way to unlock 4K rendering.

For PS4 Pro, verify 4K at 60Hz
Do not rely on the “4K” label alone. PlayStation recommends a display compatible with 4K/60Hz for PS4 Pro 4K setup. If the display does not support that capability, the console may scale output down to 2K/60Hz; PlayStation uses that wording, so check the monitor’s own documentation rather than assuming it means a particular marketed resolution. Any receiver or other device between the console and monitor must also support the needed signal.
Check HDCP across the signal chain
PlayStation warns that PS4 Pro may not display 4K games or streaming when the display chain lacks HDCP 2.2. Its workaround of using HDCP 1.4 only can limit output to 1080p. If you use an AV receiver, switch, or adapter, confirm compatibility for each link, or test a direct console-to-monitor connection.

What to check for HDR
All PS4 consoles support HDR video output, but the monitor and setup must also support it. PlayStation’s HDR setup instructions call for an HDR10-compatible 2K or 4K display, a Premium HDMI cable, HDR-enabled content, and automatic HDR and Deep Color settings. PlayStation recommends connecting the console directly to the display for HDR.
HDR support is therefore not just a console checkbox: confirm HDR10 on the monitor’s specifications and that the specific HDMI input and any devices in between can carry the required signal. If HDR is not a priority, it need not outweigh resolution, HDMI compatibility, or audio needs when comparing monitors.

Plan how you will hear game audio
HDMI carries audio, and PlayStation says audio output is optimized for the connected device. That does not guarantee a monitor has built-in speakers or a headphone jack; check the exact model’s ports and audio features. If it lacks the option you want, plan to use separate speakers or a headset. PlayStation also notes that the CUH-2000 series PS4 does not have optical digital output, which may matter when choosing an audio setup. See PlayStation’s PS4 audio-output guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare gaming performance and practical fit
Once resolution and signal compatibility are settled, compare monitor-specific input lag and response-time measurements if gaming responsiveness matters to you. Those figures vary by model and test conditions; PlayStation’s compatibility guidance does not rank monitors or provide lag measurements, so avoid treating a specification label as proof that one model is faster than another.
