When choosing an espresso machine, don’t buy on the biggest pressure number alone. Look at how you can adjust the grind and dose, whether you want an integrated or separate grinder, and how much control—or convenience—you want when making milk drinks. Those choices shape the daily workflow more than a headline bar rating.
What does a coffee machine’s pressure rating tell you?
A pressure label describes a machine’s stated capability, but it does not tell you by itself what pressure the coffee experiences during extraction—or whether the machine will make espresso you enjoy. For example, De’Longhi lists the US Magnifica ESAM3300 as a “15-Bar” machine. That rating is not interchangeable with extraction pressure.
A 2017 Barista Guild of America survey reported by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) gathered responses from 275 baristas. The reported average extraction pressure was 8.5 bars, and 9 bars was the most common response. These are historical survey results, not a current measurement of retail machines or a universal pass/fail rule.

The same SCA article quotes a historical Specialty Coffee Association of America definition describing espresso as brewed at 9–10 atmospheres, with a specified range of dose, water temperature, and brew time. The article also notes that espresso practice evolves, so the definition should not be treated as an immutable recipe. In the survey’s reported average shot, the figures were 18–20 g of coffee, 36.5 g output, 25–30 seconds, 9 bars, and 200°F; these are survey averages, not guaranteed settings for every coffee or machine.

Look for useful feedback, not just a high number
Some machines expose pressure information through a gauge or indicator. Breville says the Barista Express gauge monitors espresso extraction pressure and describes low-pressure pre-infusion. De’Longhi’s La Specialista guidance tells users to read its indicator in context: dose and grind affect the reading, and its FAQ advises adjusting grind when the indicator is outside the model’s “optimal zone.” The company says that a reading significantly below that zone indicates under-extraction for its La Specialista range. This is maker guidance for those machines, not a universal diagnosis.
Pressure is one part of extraction. Breville’s manual also lists bean type, roast, freshness, grind, dose, and tamping among factors that affect flavor. When comparing machines, check whether you can adjust grind and dose and whether the machine offers feedback that helps you make changes. The cited sources do not establish that a pressure gauge is necessary for good home espresso.

Should you choose a built-in grinder or a separate one?
A machine with an integrated grinder combines more of the bean-to-cup workflow in one appliance. De’Longhi’s ESAM3300 page, for example, describes a built-in conical burr grinder with 13 settings and says the machine can also use pre-ground coffee. Breville lists an integrated steel conical burr grinder and 25 settings on the Barista Express Impress. Those are specifications of specific models, not minimum standards for all machines; a larger settings count alone does not prove better grinding.
A separate grinder is also a valid route, especially if you already own one or want to pair a grinder with a manual machine. Breville describes that combination in its manual-machine guidance. The choice is mainly about how you want to work, the counter space available, and which parts you already have—not evidence that one arrangement always tastes better.

Compare the workflow before the feature list
- Convenience: An integrated grinder reduces the number of separate devices and steps. A separate grinder adds an appliance but can be used independently of the espresso machine.
- Adjustment: Check whether you can change grind size and dose, rather than relying on the advertised number of settings.
- Space and upkeep: Consider the counter footprint and how you will clean the grinder and coffee path.
- Control and replacement: If you want to learn manual preparation or prefer to replace or service components independently, check how the machine and grinder are designed. The cited sources do not compare serviceability across brands.
Manual steam wand or automatic milk frother?
A manual steam wand gives you direct control over milk texture, but you have to learn the technique and clean the wand after use. Breville’s latte recipe recommends starting with cold milk, texturing it, and then focusing on temperature; its target of 60–65°C applies to that recipe, not every milk drink. De’Longhi describes its My LatteArt wand as a manual microfoam option on relevant La Specialista models.
An automatic system reduces the hands-on steps. De’Longhi describes LatteCrema on the La Specialista Maestro as an automatic carafe system, while Breville says some super-automatic machines prepare milk and dispense drinks such as lattes. Features vary by model: verify whether the machine has a manual wand, an automatic system, or both.

The practical choice is control and practice versus push-button convenience. Think about how often you make milk drinks, whether you want to learn steaming, how many drinks you prepare at once, and whether you are willing to clean a wand or milk carafe. The cited sources do not establish that either system produces objectively better milk.
Include cleaning in the decision
Milk handling is part of the daily workflow. Breville’s steam-wand manual instructs users to wipe and purge the wand after texturing milk. Its super-automatic guidance calls for cleaning milk-contact parts and regular descaling. Automatic systems may involve a carafe, tubes, brew unit, or cleaning cycle; exact requirements differ by machine. Read the specific model’s manual before buying so its routine suits you.

How do manual and automatic machines differ in everyday use?
| What to compare | Manual or semi-automatic setup | More automatic setup |
|---|---|---|
| User work | You may dose and tamp coffee and start or stop extraction; a manual wand also requires milk-texturing technique. | Depending on the model, grinding, brewing, and milk preparation may be automated. |
| Grinder | May use an integrated grinder or a separate one. | Often integrates a grinder and brewing system; verify the specific machine. |
| Milk | A manual wand gives you control and requires wiping and purging. | Some models use automatic milk systems or preset milk drinks. |
| Feedback and adjustment | Check grind and dose adjustments, shot controls, and whether pressure feedback is provided. | Check which settings are adjustable and which are fixed or preset; details vary by model. |
| Cleaning | Follow the manual for the coffee path and wand. | Milk containers, tubes, brew units, and cleaning cycles vary by model. |
A practical checklist before you buy
- Choose your level of involvement. Decide whether you want to dose, tamp, and texture milk yourself or automate more of the process.
- Assess the grinder setup. Check whether the machine includes a grinder, whether you can adjust it, and whether a separate grinder better fits what you already own.
- Read pressure claims in context. Treat a pump or pressure rating as one specification. Look for a clear explanation of extraction feedback or adjustment rather than choosing the largest bar number.
- Check the milk system and its routine. Confirm the machine’s wand or automatic-frother features and read how milk-contact parts are cleaned.
- Review the model manual. Use it to confirm operating steps, cleaning requirements, and which settings are available on the exact machine you are considering.
