To connect a Bluetooth speaker to a TV that cannot transmit Bluetooth audio, use a separate Bluetooth audio transmitter. Connect the transmitter to an audio output on the TV—usually optical/TOSLINK, 3.5 mm, or stereo RCA Audio OUT—then pair the speaker with the transmitter. The transmitter must accept the TV’s output type, and the speaker must be compatible with it.
First, check what your TV can actually do
A TV may have Bluetooth for a remote, keyboard, or other accessory without supporting Bluetooth audio output. For example, Sony says certain Android TV models and model years do not support the A2DP profile needed to send audio to Bluetooth headphones. Its guidance applies to the listed models, not every Android TV; check your TV’s model-specific support information. A separate transmitter is one workaround for a TV without Bluetooth audio transmission.
Look at the ports on the TV and identify an audio output, not just any audio connector. Common options are labeled Optical OUT, Digital Optical, SPDIF, or TOSLINK; a 3.5 mm headphone or audio output; and red-and-white RCA Audio OUT. Red-and-white RCA Audio IN ports will not send sound out of the TV.

Choose a transmitter that matches the TV output
A Bluetooth audio transmitter takes sound from the TV and sends it wirelessly to the speaker. The TV-to-transmitter connection is wired; only the transmitter-to-speaker connection uses Bluetooth.

- Optical/TOSLINK: If the TV has an optical output, choose a transmitter with an optical input. Avantree recommends this route when available for its HT280 setup. Connect the TV’s optical output to the transmitter’s optical input.
- 3.5 mm AUX or headphone: Connect the TV’s headphone/audio output to a transmitter’s matching analog input. Use the cable required by the ports on both devices.
- Stereo RCA: Use the TV’s red and white connectors only if they are labeled Audio OUT. Connect them to matching RCA inputs on the transmitter, or use an appropriate RCA-to-3.5 mm cable if the transmitter accepts 3.5 mm analog input.
- HDMI ARC/eARC: This is an option only with an adapter that supports the TV’s specific ARC/eARC connection and can transmit Bluetooth audio. Confirm all three points—the TV port, the adapter’s supported standard, and Bluetooth transmission—before choosing this route.
Before buying, check which cables and power supply are included. A separate optical, RCA, or 3.5 mm cable is needed only if the connection requires it and the transmitter package does not include it.
Connect and pair the speaker
- Identify the TV’s audio output. Read the port label and confirm it is an output. Do not connect to an RCA Audio IN port.
- Match the transmitter input. Choose optical, analog 3.5 mm, RCA, or a compatible HDMI ARC/eARC adapter according to the TV port.
- Connect and power the transmitter. Follow its manual. If it has an input selector, choose the input connected to the TV.
- Pair the speaker. Put the speaker into pairing mode and follow the pairing instructions for both the speaker and transmitter.
- Play TV audio and adjust volume. Set the TV’s audio output as needed and adjust the speaker volume.
Menu labels and settings vary by TV model, so use the TV manual for the exact audio-output path. These connection steps follow manufacturer setup guidance; they are not a claim of hands-on testing.

Troubleshoot silence or audio delay
If there is no sound
- Confirm the cable runs from a TV audio output to the matching transmitter input.
- Check that the transmitter is powered on and set to the input you connected.
- Confirm the speaker is paired with the transmitter, rather than another nearby device.
- For optical connections, check the TV’s audio-output selection and digital-audio settings. The accepted formats and menu path depend on the TV and transmitter, so consult both manuals.
If picture and sound are out of sync
Bluetooth can add delay, and the result depends on the transmitter, speaker, and the audio codec they use together. Check the exact codec support of both devices; a transmitter’s support for a low-latency codec does not mean the speaker supports it too.

Check TV speaker behavior and other requirements
Whether the TV’s built-in speakers keep playing depends on the TV and the output you use. In particular, a headphone output may mute them. Check the TV’s audio settings and manual to see whether simultaneous playback is supported; it is not guaranteed for every model.
If you want to connect more than one speaker or listener, confirm the transmitter’s supported number of simultaneous Bluetooth connections and whether that affects available codec choices. Bluetooth branding alone does not establish which audio profiles or codecs a speaker supports, so verify compatibility in the device specifications.

- The transmitter input matches an actual audio output on the TV.
- The speaker can pair with the transmitter.
- If lip-sync matters, both devices support a shared codec suitable for your use.
