Every supermarket sets its own rules for loyalty pricing, grocery refunds, and delivery. Before your first shop, check whether your loyalty account is linked to the channel you’ll use, how to report damaged or incorrect items, and the full delivery cost—including basket minimums and slot restrictions. The examples below are retailer-specific: Safeway and Walmart+ are U.S. examples; Tesco and ASDA are U.K. examples; the ACCC findings concern Australia. Check the chosen store’s current local terms before relying on any policy.
Before your first shop: a quick checklist
- Loyalty: Find out whether enrollment is free, whether you need a card or can use an account or phone number, and whether online and in-store prices and rewards are linked.
- Returns and quality: Check which products are covered, how soon you must report a problem, what remedy is offered, and whether proof of purchase is required.
- Delivery or collection: Confirm your address is eligible, then compare the fee, basket minimum, below-minimum charge, available slots, and any pass or express-service conditions.
- Privacy: Review what customer data the loyalty program collects and how its terms describe sharing and targeted advertising.
For a fair comparison, price the same sample shop at each supermarket and compare the amount shown at checkout, not just shelf prices or advertised discounts.
Will a loyalty program give you the advertised price?
Do not assume that signing up in one place automatically links every benefit across online and in-store shopping. Check whether the price is automatic or must be activated, whether you have entered the right account details, and whether points or rewards earned in one channel can be used in another.
Check that your accounts and shopping channels are linked
Safeway’s U.S. special terms offer an example of why this matters. When shoppers provide loyalty information during online registration, online and in-store benefits typically connect through the loyalty card or phone number. But the terms also describe a virtual loyalty number that can provide online loyalty prices without making other online-earned benefits available through the shopper’s existing in-store account. Safeway also says online discounts may differ from physical-store discounts; when a partner banner fulfills an online order, that banner’s pricing and rewards may apply. Check the privacy trade-off
A loyalty discount can involve sharing information about your shopping. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Supermarkets Inquiry 2024–2025 Interim Report discusses concerns about unclear loyalty-program terms and privacy disclosures, changes to terms, consumers’ control over data sharing, and third-party targeted advertising. The report also references approximately 2,000 reports about loyalty programs received by Australian Consumer Law regulators in the ACCC’s 2019 report, which covered the five years to December 2018. That is a historical figure, not a current annual count, and the Australian findings do not establish how every supermarket program operates. Read the ACCC interim report and review the specific program’s privacy notice before enrolling.

What happens if groceries are damaged, bad, or incorrect?
Grocery return rules depend on the product and the country. Perishable food may follow a different process from non-perishable goods, and an unsatisfactory item may be handled differently from a missing item or an incorrect substitution. Check the retailer’s policy and local consumer law rather than assuming the store accepts groceries under the same rules as general merchandise.
Find out what to report and when
ASDA’s U.K. grocery terms distinguish non-perishable products reported as damaged, faulty, mis-described, or incomplete from goods that may deteriorate or expire rapidly. For the latter, ASDA’s terms describe contacting it before the stated use-by or best-before date, or within seven days for loose goods without such a date. These are ASDA-specific conditions, not a general grocery deadline. The terms say applicable U.K. or national consumer legislation and manufacturer guarantees are not affected. Check ASDA’s current grocery terms for the applicable remedy and reporting process.

Look for separate product guarantees
ASDA also describes a “Try Me Love Me” promise for qualifying own-brand products bearing that packaging mark. Its terms say customers can contact customer service for a refund and an e-voucher of equivalent value for a replacement on a later online shop. This is a retailer-specific promise for qualifying products, not a general consumer right.
Check the policy before you need it
On the chosen supermarket’s returns or help page, look for product coverage, reporting deadlines, acceptable proof of purchase, and whether the store offers a refund, replacement, or credit. Check the separate process for substitutions and missing items, and consult the consumer-rights rules that apply where you live.

How much does grocery delivery really cost?
The delivery fee is only one part of the cost. Check that your address is in the service area, that a suitable slot is available, and that your items qualify. Then add any basket-minimum charge, express or other service fees, and the cost of meeting a minimum you would not otherwise reach. If considering collection, check its minimum and fees separately.
Compare the total at checkout
Tesco’s U.K. grocery terms give one example of how minimums can differ by service. The terms state a £50 minimum basket for home delivery and a £25 minimum for Click+Collect, with a £5 charge when the basket is below the relevant minimum. The charge is added at checkout and removed if the basket is increased above the threshold before order confirmation. If the entire shop is refunded, the terms say the charge is refunded; if only some items are refunded, it is not. These figures and conditions may change, so check the current checkout and Tesco’s terms before placing an order.

Read the conditions behind “free” delivery
Walmart+ in the U.S. illustrates why a $0 advertised delivery fee does not necessarily mean every order is free to deliver. Its terms condition scheduled store delivery on an order of at least $35 and an eligible, available time slot; an order below that amount can incur a below-order-minimum fee. Eligibility can depend on the items, inventory, delivery address, and slot. Unscheduled-delivery membership benefits also have item and seller restrictions. Check the current Walmart+ terms and the fee shown for your address and order.
Decide whether a delivery pass fits your shopping pattern
ASDA’s U.K. Delivery Pass terms describe unlimited standard deliveries subject to limitations, exclude express deliveries, require at least £40 in qualifying spend, and say slots are not guaranteed. The terms also provide for opting in or out of auto-renewal and advance notice before renewal. A pass is worth considering only after checking its current price and rules against the number of qualifying deliveries you realistically expect to place. Use a like-for-like comparison
Before choosing a supermarket, enter the same sample basket at each store and record the checkout total for the service you would actually use. Include the delivery or collection fee, any minimum-basket charge, and any paid-pass cost relevant to that order. Treat discounts and membership benefits as savings only if your account, items, address, and chosen slot qualify.
