Before buying, find out exactly what the digital item gives you, what it depends on to keep working, who handles refunds, and what physical merchandise—if any—is included. “Buy” may mean a limited license rather than permanent ownership, while a collectible token, its artwork, and rights to use that artwork can be separate things. The right terms depend on the platform, seller, issuer, and your location.
What are you actually buying?
Separate the transaction into its parts before you pay. A branded offer might include game software, an in-game item, a digital collectible, physical merchandise, or some combination. Check the item description and terms for each component; a bundle label alone does not establish what rights or goods are included.
A game or other digital content
A digital storefront purchase may grant a license to use content rather than ownership of the software or unrestricted rights to it. For example, PlayStation’s U.S. Terms of Service state: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” The same terms say the license is not transferable unless local law requires otherwise, and treat physical goods separately. This describes PlayStation’s U.S. terms, not every platform or jurisdiction.

Ask separately what the token represents, what rights you receive in associated artwork, and whether you may display, transfer, or commercially use that artwork. Those rights are determined by the issuer’s agreement, not simply by the fact that a token is recorded digitally. Mattel’s Digital Collectible License Agreement, for example, describes an NFT linked to digital art and distinguishes that intangible art from physical objects. Its terms are an issuer-specific example, not a universal NFT rule.

Physical merchandise
Look for an itemized list of what ships: for example, a figure, toy, book, shirt, or accessory. Check quantities, condition, shipping charges, delivery estimates, and return terms. Ubisoft’s U.S. Store Terms of Sale, last updated September 2024, cover both digital content and physical collectibles such as figurines, toys, books, T-shirts, and accessories; that does not verify the authenticity or contents of a separate marketplace listing.
What could make the digital item stop working?
Identify every dependency before purchase: a platform account, a particular game, an online server, an app, a wallet, a redemption code, or an image-hosting service. The FTC explains that access may depend on account status, the platform remaining in operation, DRM, or the seller continuing to have rights to the material. Its guidance warns: “You may have access to it only while you have an active account with the platform or website that sold it, or only for as long as that platform or website stays in business.” See the FTC’s guidance on owning digital content.

A token record by itself does not establish that a game, website, image host, or redemption service will stay available. Read what the issuer promises about access and what happens if a service closes or your account is lost; if the terms do not say, do not assume the benefit survives.

Start with the actual point of sale. The platform, developer, marketplace, or merchandise seller may each have different rules, and buying a bundle can make it especially important to identify which seller charged you for each part.

Third-party and platform purchases
Epic’s Terms of Service say purchases through third-party stores are transactions with those third parties and governed by their refund rules. Its refund policy also directs real-money purchases through third-party mobile or console stores, or a developer’s own payment provider, to the policy at that point of purchase.
One platform-specific example
Under PlayStation’s U.S. cancellation policy, games and add-ons can generally be canceled within 14 days if downloading or streaming has not started. After it starts, they are generally not eligible for a refund unless faulty. The policy separates other categories—including pre-orders, subscriptions, wallet funds, bundles, and physical goods—and preserves rights that may apply under local law. These are PlayStation U.S. terms, not a general refund guarantee.

How do you verify the seller and the merchandise?
For a marketplace purchase, check the listing and seller rather than relying on franchise branding or product images. Confirm the seller’s identity, whether official licensing can be substantiated, the precise contents and condition, shipping charges, delivery terms, returns, and how disputes are handled. Review what buyer protection covers for that specific item and seller. The FTC’s marketplace guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure the protection applies to the thing you’re buying or the seller you’re buying from.” Use a payment method with applicable protections, and read the marketplace’s terms before checkout.
What should parents check before approving an in-game purchase?
Check the account’s payment settings and identify whether the purchase is a fixed item, consumable, or random reward. Games may offer children in-game currency, weapons, outfits, loot boxes, or bonus levels, sometimes charging a card linked to the account. The FTC’s Kids and Video Games guidance describes these examples. Review spending controls and the specific game’s purchase details before approving a transaction.

Pre-purchase checklist
- Write down every included component: game, digital item, token, artwork rights, and physical goods.
- Read the license or issuer terms for permitted use, transfer, display, and any commercial rights.
- Note required accounts, platforms, games, servers, apps, wallets, or redemption services.
- Identify the seller for each part and check that seller’s refund, cancellation, and return terms.
- Verify merchandise contents, licensing evidence, condition, shipping cost, and delivery expectations.
- Check the buyer-protection terms for the actual seller and product.
- If a child will use the account, review linked payment methods, spending limits, and whether rewards are random or consumable.
Rules differ by territory and can change. The platform and seller examples above are U.S.-specific where stated; check the terms shown at checkout and the laws applicable where you live before relying on a particular license, refund window, or protection.
