A headless browser runs a real browser engine without displaying a visible browser window. It can navigate pages, interact with controls, run tests, and produce screenshots or PDFs; “headless” describes how the browser is presented, not whether a browser is running. The right setup depends on whether you need broad browser coverage, close fidelity to a visible browser, or a leaner mode for a specific automation job.

What does “headless browser” mean?

Chrome describes Headless as running in an unattended environment without a visible user interface. Since Chrome 112, its updated Headless mode creates platform windows without displaying them and shares code with regular Chrome. This is different from saying the browser has no rendering or browser engine.

There is also a historical distinction that matters when configuring automation: starting with Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the older Headless implementation became available only as the separate chrome-headless-shell binary. Today, “Chrome Headless” can mean the current mode that shares code with headed Chrome, while “Headless Shell” refers to that separate older implementation. See Chrome’s Headless mode documentation.

What can you use one for?

Headless browsers are useful when a task needs browser behavior but not an on-screen window. Documented applications include:

These are examples of browser-automation tasks, not a claim that every site permits automated access or that automation bypasses a site’s controls.

Choose a framework and browser mode by the job

There is no universal best framework or mode in the available documentation. Choose based on browser-engine coverage, how closely the run should match a visible browser, and whether you need the complete browser feature set.

Choice Documented coverage or behavior Best fit to consider
Chrome Headless Current Headless shares code with headed Chrome. Automation where closer alignment with regular Chrome behavior matters.
Puppeteer regular Headless headless: true selects Chrome Headless by default. Chrome automation using Puppeteer’s standard headless mode.
Puppeteer Headless Shell headless: 'shell' selects the shell. Puppeteer says it may be more performant when the complete Chrome feature set is unnecessary, but its behavior does not completely match regular Chrome. Automation that can accept the shell’s behavioral differences and does not need the full feature set.
Puppeteer headful headless: false launches a visible browser. Work that needs an on-screen session or a direct visual check.
Playwright Supports Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox, as well as branded Chrome and Edge channels. Its default Chromium headless operation uses a headless shell, which can differ from newer Chrome Headless. Tests that need multiple browser engines or explicit browser-channel coverage.

Framework support and available browser combinations depend on the framework and version. For Playwright, keep the package updated and install its matching browser builds; its documentation notes that Chromium may be ahead of branded stable browsers. When a test is intended to predict a real user’s experience, record the browser build and mode in the test setup and validate against the environment you care about. See Playwright’s browser documentation and the Puppeteer Headless modes guide.

  1. Open a terminal where Chrome is installed.
  2. Run Chrome with the headless and screenshot options, replacing the URL and output path as needed:
    google-chrome --headless --screenshot=page.png https://example.com
  3. Check the command’s output and open page.png. If your executable is named differently, substitute that executable name.

This direct command is suitable for a basic capture. For repeatable tests, multi-step interaction, PDFs, or browser-engine coverage, use an automation framework such as Puppeteer or Playwright and explicitly choose the browser mode that matches your goal.

Run headless automation in the cloud when needed

Local execution is one option; managed cloud execution is another when a browser job needs to run outside a developer’s local session. Google Cloud documents running headless Chrome on Cloud Run for tasks such as scraping, extraction, and testing complex journeys with interactions. That documentation establishes a deployment option, not a general rule that cloud execution is necessary or cheaper; the point at which it makes sense depends on the application’s operational needs. See Google Cloud’s browser automation documentation.

Common problems and practical checks

  • The Chrome command is not found: the executable name or installation path differs on your system. Run the command using the installed Chrome executable’s actual name or full path.
  • The screenshot does not match a visible-browser test: confirm which browser build and mode the automation framework launched. In Playwright, default Chromium headless uses a shell that can behave differently from newer Chrome Headless.
  • A test behaves differently after a browser update: make the package and browser-build pairing explicit. Playwright recommends updating the package and installing its matching browsers; record those versions when diagnosing changes.
  • You are considering Headless Shell for speed: Puppeteer describes possible performance benefits only when the full Chrome feature set is not needed. It also warns that shell behavior does not completely match regular Chrome, and the documentation does not establish a universal speed advantage.
  • A local job is being moved to cloud infrastructure: first identify the operational need for running outside the developer session. Cloud Run is a documented option, but the cited documentation does not provide a general cost comparison or threshold for moving.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Mode choice is a trade-off rather than a guaranteed optimization. Puppeteer’s guidance makes Headless Shell a possible choice when the full browser feature set is unnecessary, while noting behavioral differences; it does not provide a benchmark or promise that shell mode will always be faster. For reliable test interpretation, keep the browser version and mode consistent with the behavior you intend to validate.

Cloud execution can provide a place to run automation outside a local session, but the available Cloud Run guidance does not establish a general cost, scaling, or operational break-even point. Estimate those factors for the workload and deployment you actually plan to run rather than assuming a cloud service is required for ordinary local automation.
