A Microsoft AI chatbot is conversational software that uses artificial intelligence to interpret a typed or spoken request and respond in natural language. “Microsoft AI chatbot” is a descriptive phrase, not the name of one specific Microsoft product; Microsoft Copilot Chat is a current example.
What does “AI chatbot” mean?
A chatbot is software designed to interact with people through conversation. Microsoft describes a chatbot as an AI-powered application that can engage in human conversation naturally. People may communicate with one by typing or speaking, and some chatbot experiences can also use graphics.
At a high level, the interaction works like this: you send a question or instruction through an app, website, messaging channel, or voice interface; the chatbot interprets the input and its likely intent; then it returns a response through that channel. The exchange can continue as a conversation. This describes the general interaction, not a single technical design used by every chatbot.

Microsoft’s glossary describes LLMs as generative models trained on large amounts of data to produce human-like responses to natural-language queries, often through a chatbot. That is Microsoft’s glossary description, rather than a universal technical standard.

What is Microsoft’s AI chatbot called?
Microsoft Copilot Chat is a current Microsoft example. Microsoft Learn describes it as an AI prompt-and-response experience powered by LLMs and primarily grounded in web data. Microsoft also uses “Copilot” for natural-language assistants that can support creative work, generate insights, and help execute automated workflows.
Copilot Chat can support activities such as web research and summarization, drafting and rewriting, analyzing uploaded files, image creation, and interacting with agents. Available capabilities can change as Microsoft updates the service, and what you can use depends on the access point, licensing, and organizational settings. See Microsoft’s Copilot Chat overview for current details.

What information can Microsoft Copilot Chat use?
Do not assume that every Microsoft AI chatbot can search all of your workplace or personal information. Copilot Chat’s grounding depends on where you access it and what license or configuration applies. Its standard experience is primarily grounded in web data; supported app context, uploaded content, agents, and licensing can affect the information available in a particular interaction.

Microsoft says that Copilot Chat users without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license cannot access their shared enterprise data, individual data, or external data indexed through Microsoft Graph connectors through Copilot Chat. Users may still upload files, and an organization may enable some agent experiences. A specific account or deployment can differ, so consult Microsoft’s overview and Copilot Chat FAQ for the applicable details.

What can a Microsoft AI chatbot do?
In general, a chatbot can respond to questions and instructions in conversational language, help with simple automated tasks, and continue an exchange as the user provides more input. In Copilot Chat, documented uses include researching and summarizing web information, generating or revising content, analyzing uploaded files, creating images, and working with agents. These are examples of product capabilities, not a guarantee that every user has the same tools or access.
Microsoft’s chatbot explainer describes the broader category, while its Copilot Chat documentation explains the current product. Check the latter for up-to-date feature and access information.
