For a free first try, use VS Code’s built-in dictation on a supported desktop: it turns speech into text in several VS Code surfaces, and after its one-time model download, transcription runs locally and can work offline. It is experimental, though, and it is not the same kind of tool as Claude Code or Copilot CLI. Those are coding-agent interfaces; dictation tools such as Code Dictator and Wispr Flow supply speech-to-text input.

How the five options differ

Option What it does What to know
VS Code built-in dictation Converts speech to text in chat, the Agents window, editors, and terminals. Experimental. Desktop transcription uses a downloaded on-device model on supported systems. The web version sends audio to Microsoft’s voice service. VS Code voice documentation.
Code Dictator A VS Code extension intended for dictating prompts to coding assistants. Its project repository describes it as free and open-source. Check the current listing and repository for compatibility, maintenance, and distribution details. Project repository.
Wispr Flow A separate dictation app marketed for use across apps, including VS Code and developer workflows. The vendor describes support for developer terminology and prompts. These are vendor claims, not an independent accuracy or speed comparison. Wispr Flow and developer page.
Claude Code Anthropic’s coding tool, used from a terminal or supported IDE. It performs coding-agent work rather than basic speech transcription. Setup requires authentication and internet access for AI processing. Consult Anthropic’s setup documentation for current prerequisites.
GitHub Copilot CLI A coding CLI that can connect to VS Code. GitHub documents viewing a current workspace CLI session transcript in VS Code. Copilot plan allowances are separate from dictation and can change. See Copilot CLI documentation and VS Code Copilot setup.

The practical distinction is input versus action: dictation puts words into a field; a coding agent interprets a request and can work with code. You can dictate a prompt and then submit it to an agent, but the dictation tool is not itself doing the coding.

Which choice fits your workflow?

Start with built-in dictation for VS Code-only use

If your goal is to speak a prompt into VS Code without paying for a separate service, built-in dictation is the most direct first test. It covers chat, the Agents window, editors, and terminals. Dictation is enabled by default when VS Code AI features are enabled, but the feature is experimental, so behavior may change.

Consider Code Dictator for assistant prompts in VS Code

Code Dictator is presented by its project as a free, open-source extension specifically for dictating to coding assistants. Its practical value depends on the extension’s current compatibility and maintenance, which should be checked in the repository and extension listing before installation.

Consider Wispr Flow for speech input beyond VS Code

Wispr Flow is a separate app marketed for cross-app dictation, including developer prompts and documentation. That broader scope may be useful if you want speech input in multiple applications, not only VS Code. The vendor’s claims should not be read as independently verified performance results.

Use Claude Code or Copilot CLI for agent work, not transcription

Choose between coding agents based on the coding workflow you need; do not treat either as a standalone voice-to-text product. You can use a dictation option to enter text for an agent, then review and send the prompt through the agent’s normal interface.

Where speech is processed in VS Code

Desktop: local recognition after setup

VS Code documents local dictation on Windows x64 and Arm64, macOS Apple silicon, and Linux x64 and Arm64 with glibc 2.34 or later. The speech-recognition model must first be downloaded. After that setup, recognition runs on-device and can work offline. The VS Code documentation describes these platform and processing details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Web: audio goes to a Microsoft service

VS Code for the Web does not support on-device transcription. It streams audio to Microsoft’s AI voice service and requires network connectivity and GitHub sign-in, so its data path differs from desktop dictation.

Optional cleanup sends transcript text to a model

Local speech recognition and language-model cleanup are separate steps. If dictation.experimental.llmCleanup is enabled, VS Code sends the recognized transcript text to a Copilot language model to clean it up. That setting changes the handling of transcript text; it is not required for the default local recognition step.

Dictation is not Voice Mode

VS Code describes both dictation and Voice Mode as experimental. Dictation converts speech to text. Voice Mode supports spoken agent conversation and audio responses, so it serves a different interaction pattern.

What “free” means for each option

  • VS Code dictation: The built-in feature is documented as experimental and enabled by default when AI features are enabled. The cited documentation does not describe a separate dictation charge.
  • Code Dictator: Its repository labels the extension free and open-source; verify current distribution and status in the project listing.
  • Wispr Flow: Its developer page lists Flow Pro at $12 per user per month and a 14-day free trial for everyone on the described Teams plan. These are vendor-page terms, not a guarantee of current regional availability or the consumer free-tier allowance. Confirm current terms with the vendor before relying on them.
  • Copilot: GitHub says eligible users without a Copilot subscription can enroll in Copilot Free, with monthly allowances for inline suggestions and AI credits. This does not mean unlimited access to every model or feature; check GitHub’s current setup and plan details.
  • Claude Code: The setup documentation covers prerequisites and authentication, but the sources here do not establish a free allowance. Check Anthropic’s current setup and account terms rather than assuming it is free.

How to evaluate dictation for coding

  1. Check where you need speech input. Built-in VS Code dictation works in several VS Code surfaces; Wispr Flow is marketed for broader app coverage. Choose based on whether your work stays in VS Code or spans other applications.
  2. Decide what data path is acceptable. On supported desktop setups, default VS Code recognition is local after the model download. The web version sends audio to Microsoft’s service, while optional cleanup sends transcript text to a Copilot model.
  3. Separate transcription from coding. A dictation tool enters words; Claude Code and Copilot CLI are agent interfaces. A speech transcript still needs review and submission to the agent.
  4. Test the phrases you actually use. The available sources do not provide an independent comparison of accuracy for identifiers, punctuation, or code syntax. Try project names, file paths, commands, and identifiers from your own work, then inspect the transcript before sending it.

No independent comparative test establishes a transcription-accuracy or speed winner among these options. Wispr Flow’s “4x faster” wording is vendor marketing, not a verified comparison in the cited material. A built-in or laptop microphone may be enough to begin; the available sources do not establish any particular headset or microphone as necessary.
