A “16-seat semi-private jet” is not a standardized flight category. It may describe a charter aircraft’s capacity, while a seat-by-seat scheduled service could use a smaller turboprop. Before you book, confirm whether you are buying one seat or chartering the aircraft, who operates the flight, and which aircraft is planned. Those details determine where to go, when to arrive, what to pack and whether bags can transfer to a connection.
So, what should you expect on a semi-private flight? Use the itinerary and the named operator’s current instructions—not the “semi-private” label—as your guide. The examples below show how much policies can differ.
First, find out what “16-seat semi-private” means for your booking
Seat-by-seat scheduled service, public charter sold by the seat, and a whole-aircraft charter are different products. A passenger count in an aircraft description does not tell you which one you have purchased.

Check your confirmation for the seller, direct air carrier, route, aircraft if specified, and whether your fare is for a seat or the entire aircraft. Tradewind says aircraft it arranges outside its own fleet are not owned or operated by Tradewind. If you are chartering, ask who will operate the flight, what aircraft and cabin configuration are proposed, and what happens if that aircraft changes.
Questions to settle before paying
- Am I buying a seat on a scheduled or public-charter flight, or chartering the whole aircraft?
- Which company is the direct operator, and is the planned aircraft operated by that company or sourced from a partner?
- Which airport entrance, FBO or lounge should I use, and what are the arrival recommendation and check-in cutoff?
- What are the bag weight, size and special-item limits for this exact flight?
- What are the change and cancellation terms, and which amenities are actually included?
Tradewind describes its own charter process as a quote, a customized itinerary, then confirmation. It says most of its charters can be arranged with as little as 24 hours’ notice, subject to availability; that is not a general charter guarantee. Tradewind charter service
Use the terminal and check-in time on your itinerary
Some small-aircraft services use a fixed-base operator (FBO) or dedicated lounge rather than the main passenger terminal. The address may be on a different side of the airport, so search for the exact terminal or FBO name and address in your map app—not just the airport. Check the operator’s parking and drop-off directions, too.

Arrival and cutoff instructions vary by operator. Tradewind’s Northeast scheduled-service guidance recommends arriving 30 minutes before departure and says check-in closes 15 minutes before departure. JSX’s agency-facing page says, “Check in 20 minutes before departure.” These are operator-specific instructions, not interchangeable industry standards. Expect check-in and screening requirements to depend on the route
A smaller terminal does not guarantee that you can skip screening. Tradewind’s contract of carriage says passengers and luggage may be subject to screening, including searches, X-rays and questioning. For an international trip, confirm travel-document requirements with the operating carrier and destination authorities. If you are connecting from a commercial airline, verify how to reach the departure terminal, the check-in cutoff and whether you must collect and recheck your bags; a small-terminal departure does not by itself mean baggage will transfer.

Ask what the actual aircraft provides
Aircraft type and configuration shape the onboard experience and the room available for luggage. Tradewind describes its scheduled PC-12 as a Swiss-built turboprop flown by two pilots, with air conditioning and a pressurized cabin. Its Northeast guidance notes that smaller regional aircraft have limited baggage capacity because of space and weight-and-balance constraints. Its larger charter category is a separate service. JSX lists business-class seats, complimentary snacks and drinks, free Starlink Wi-Fi, and up to three checked bags included on its service page. Those are JSX-listed features, not promises about another operator or a separately arranged charter. JSX service
Do not infer cabin stowage, lavatory availability, seat assignment, boarding arrangements or food service from a passenger count or the word “semi-private.” Ask the named operator what the planned aircraft and configuration offer, especially if you need a particular amenity or assistance.

Check baggage limits before you pack
On Tradewind’s scheduled service, the published allowance is 50 lb (23 kg) total per seated guest, including carry-on-size luggage and personal items. Its Northeast guidance limits a cabin personal item to 6 × 9 × 17 inches; larger items go in the luggage compartment, and wheeled bags must be checked. Tradewind warns that excess weight or unforeseen weight-and-balance limits can result in a bag being left behind. Its policy says a guest may need to collect excess baggage the same day; scheduled-service locations do not offer storage or unaccompanied luggage transport. It also advises calling ahead about items such as golf clubs, which are not guaranteed. Confirm rules for batteries and unusual items
Battery restrictions can depend on the device and the carrier’s current hazardous-material instructions. Tradewind’s scheduled-service page gives lithium-battery guidance, including keeping most lithium batteries in an accessible personal item, limits on some battery capacities and a ban on certain large battery-powered devices. Check the operator’s latest instructions and relevant official safety guidance before packing batteries or unusual equipment. Tradewind scheduled service
Do not assume checked bags will meet your connection
Baggage transfer depends on the route and how the trips were booked. Tradewind says bags are automatically transferred in specified Caribbean connection cases only when the trip is purchased in a single booking through named interline partners via San Juan, or through its VIP Experience in San Juan. Otherwise, its instructions say travelers must collect and recheck their bags.
