Selenium 3 was a relatively low-friction upgrade for most teams using WebDriver, but not a universal drop-in replacement. The October 13, 2016 release kept the public WebDriver APIs largely intact while removing the original Selenium Core implementation. Selenium RC users had the biggest migration risk; Grid administrators also needed to check configuration and command-line options. Firefox 48 and later required geckodriver, but that was a Firefox-side change affecting Selenium 2 as well as Selenium 3.

What changed in Selenium 3?

Selenium 3.0 was announced on October 13, 2016, following Selenium 2.53.1. The project described the WebDriver APIs as a drop-in replacement for most users, with bug fixes and stability work. Simon Stewart’s release announcement said, “For users of the WebDriver APIs this is a drop-in replacement.” That was a description of the API transition, not a guarantee that every Grid setup or legacy test suite would work unchanged. Selenium 3.0: Out Now!

The major-version change: Selenium Core and RC

The major version reflected a substantial architectural cleanup: Selenium removed its original Selenium Core implementation, the JavaScript framework underlying the old Selenium RC approach. RC interfaces remained available in a legacy package, but were backed by WebDriver rather than the old implementation. Existing RC tests could therefore behave differently. The preview announcement said migration problems tended to be systemic and localized, not that every RC test necessarily failed. Selenium 3 is Coming

WebDriver users

For ordinary WebDriver code, the release announcement said Chrome and Edge were expected to continue working as before. Many teams could update the Selenium dependency without changing their test logic. The preview reported that public WebDriver APIs had not changed from the final 2.x release; the practical qualification is that browser drivers and deployment configuration still matter.

Who needed to do the most migration work?

Area What to expect What to check
WebDriver tests Generally a low-friction dependency upgrade; APIs were described as a drop-in replacement. Run the suite against the browsers and drivers used in your environment.
Selenium RC tests Legacy interfaces remained, but the implementation underneath changed to WebDriver. Identify RC imports and test assumptions about the old Selenium Core behavior. Java projects needing old APIs were directed to the selenium-leg-rc dependency; Selenium strongly discouraged using it unless necessary.
Selenium Grid Often a straightforward server or Maven dependency update, but some JSON configuration and command-line parameters changed. Review Grid JSON files, startup scripts and CI commands rather than assuming every option is compatible.
Firefox automation Firefox 48 and later required Mozilla’s geckodriver in the release-era guidance. Install and configure geckodriver where needed; this browser change applied to Selenium 2 users too.

Firefox 48 and geckodriver: a browser change, not a Selenium 3 API rule

Firefox 48 changed browser internals, and the community Firefox driver used previously would no longer work. Selenium’s release-era guidance directed users to Mozilla’s geckodriver, an executable driver playing a role similar to ChromeDriver or Microsoft Edge WebDriver. Crucially, the requirement came from Firefox and applied whether a project used Selenium 2 or Selenium 3. The 2016 preview described geckodriver as alpha software based on an evolving W3C standard; that is historical context, not a statement about its current maturity. Selenium 3 is Coming

Selenium 3 supported a transition between WebDriver protocols

Selenium 3 was not W3C-only. During development of the W3C WebDriver standard, Selenium supported both the legacy JSON Wire Protocol and W3C WebDriver. Selenium’s current upgrade guide places W3C level 1 compliance in the code around Selenium 3.11. A later explanation describes a dual-protocol handshake in which session capabilities could be sent in both formats and the returned protocol determined how the session continued. Do not apply Selenium 4 migration rules retroactively

Selenium 4 removed legacy protocol support. Its upgrade guide highlights Capabilities and Actions as areas to inspect. For Selenium 4, standard capability names include browserName, browserVersion, platformName, acceptInsecureCerts, pageLoadStrategy, proxy, timeouts and unhandledPromptBehavior; version and platform were replaced by browserVersion and platformName. Non-standard browser or cloud capabilities need a vendor prefix. These are later upgrade considerations, not changes introduced by Selenium 3.0.

Then versus now: Selenium 3 is historical guidance

Selenium 3 describes a 2016 transition, not the current setup target for a new project. The official downloads page reviewed October 3, 2026 lists Selenium 4.49.0 as stable for core language bindings and Grid, released September 9, 2026. Version and browser-driver details can change, so consult the live Selenium downloads page and relevant driver documentation before setting up a current environment. Current WebDriver documentation describes driving browsers locally or remotely; WebDriver BiDi covers bidirectional communication for browser events. Neither should be mistaken for Selenium 3 features.
