If your iPhone displays a temperature warning, turn it off, move it out of direct sunlight to a cooler place, and let it cool. If it feels warm but shows no warning, warmth can be normal during demanding tasks; Apple says you can continue using it. Stop using the phone and contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if you suspect the iPhone or its battery is damaged.
First, identify what is happening
- Warm, with no temperature warning: Check whether the phone is setting up, restoring a backup, updating software, charging wirelessly, running a demanding game or camera task, or streaming high-quality video. These activities can make an iPhone warm. Pause or finish the demanding activity and let the phone cool naturally. Apple says continued use is okay if no temperature warning appears, and the device should cool after the activity ends.
- Temperature warning on screen: Turn the iPhone off, move it away from direct sunlight to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool. Apple says emergency calls may still be possible while the warning is displayed.
- “Charging On Hold” notification: Charging has paused because the iPhone is too hot or too cold. Follow the steps below.
- Possible physical or battery damage: Discontinue use and arrange service rather than trying to open or repair the iPhone yourself.
What to do when the temperature warning appears
- Turn off the iPhone.
- Move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving it in a hot car.
- Let it cool before using or charging it again. Apple does not specify a fixed cooling time, so wait for the warning to clear rather than relying on a set number of minutes.
Do not put the iPhone in a refrigerator or freezer, apply ice, or use a powered cooling gadget. Apple’s guidance is to move the device to a cooler environment and let it cool.
What “Charging On Hold” means
On iOS 16 and later, an iPhone can pause charging when its temperature is too high or too low. If the phone is hot, move it somewhere cooler and out of direct sunlight. If you are using it, lock the screen or put it to sleep. Charging resumes when the iPhone returns to its normal temperature.
Why an iPhone may feel warm
Setup, restoring from backup, software updates, wireless charging, games, camera use, and high-quality video streaming can all make the device warmer. This warmth is expected during those activities and should subside when they finish. Warmth alone does not establish that the battery is damaged.

When its internal temperature is too high, an iPhone may temporarily slow or stop wired or wireless charging, dim or turn off the display, weaken mobile signal, disable camera features, or reduce performance. During navigation, audible directions may continue even if the display is off.
Temperature ranges to know

These are Apple’s manufacturer temperature recommendations, not a model-specific diagnosis. The guidance does not give a separate overheating threshold for each iPhone model.

When to contact Apple for service
If you suspect damage to the iPhone or its battery, stop using the device and contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says, “iPhone should only be serviced by a trained technician.” Warmth by itself does not prove there is a fault, but suspected damage or malfunction calls for trained service rather than self-disassembly.
