First confirm the date for your exact device in Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule. Google says its current policy provides 10 years of automatic updates, but the end date is model-specific; some eligible older devices require an opt-in.
How to check your Chromebook’s end-of-support date
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Choose Additional details.
- Read the date under Update schedule.
Google’s update-schedule instructions are the place to check your model’s date. Do not estimate it from the Chromebook’s purchase year or brand. If the device is managed by a school or workplace, the settings may say that updates are controlled by its administrator; contact that administrator about the device’s policy and options.
What changes after automatic updates stop?
After the final automatic update, the Chromebook no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates. Google says these updates include security updates, bug fixes, and new features. Some features already on the device or support for apps may also stop working. Google states that verified boot continues after automatic updates end, but verified boot is not a replacement for new security updates.
If you see Google’s notification, it may say: “This device will no longer receive software updates. You can continue using your computer but should consider upgrading.” Google’s guidance confirms that a working Chromebook can still be used; the decision is whether its lack of updates and any app or feature changes fit your needs.

Keep using the Chromebook
You can continue using a working device, as Google explains in its guidance on using or upgrading an old Chromebook. Consider how much you rely on it, whether the services and apps you need still work, and whether using a device without ongoing software updates fits your security expectations.
Check whether extended updates are available
Some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can receive extended updates toward a total of 10 years from the platform release. Eligibility and the available update schedule depend on the exact device, so check Google’s extended-updates information and the device’s settings before opting in.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
Check the terms carefully if you rely on Android apps or the Google Play Store. On some older eligible models, opting in removes both; other eligible older devices retain them. The outcome is model-specific, so do not assume Play Store access will remain.
Upgrade to another Chromebook
When comparing replacements, check the automatic update end date for each exact model in Google’s schedule. Also confirm that the device supports the apps and ChromeOS features you need. The right choice depends on your workload and budget; a model’s name or purchase date alone does not establish how long it will receive updates.

Recycle a Chromebook you no longer need
If you decide not to keep or pass on the device, Google’s old-Chromebook guidance links to recycling facilities in the United States. That route is not established for every country, so check local electronics-recycling options if you are elsewhere.
Ask the administrator about a managed Chromebook
For a work- or school-managed Chromebook, ask the administrator about update policies and available options. Google’s operating-system update guidance directs managed-device users to their administrator.

Can ChromeOS Flex extend an unsupported Chromebook’s life?
Do not treat ChromeOS Flex as a general way to keep an out-of-support Chromebook updated. Google says it does not support installing Flex on a Chromebook after its automatic update date. Flex is intended for supported Windows, Mac, and Linux computers instead.
For a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer being considered for Flex, check Google’s certified-model list. Certification identifies guaranteed functions; features such as Bluetooth, touchscreens, and SD-card slots may not be guaranteed on every model. Google’s ChromeOS Flex FAQ covers the Chromebook limitation.
