If Windows 11 keeps asking you to finish setting up your PC, first check whether you are still in the initial setup flow or seeing a reminder after reaching the desktop. If you can use the desktop, inspect Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings for Windows welcome and setup suggestions; labels can vary by Windows release. If setup has not finished, identify the specific step still required rather than disabling unrelated notifications.

First identify what kind of setup prompt you’re seeing

The phrase “finish setting up your PC” can refer to an unfinished first-run setup or to a later welcome suggestion. Note the exact wording and where it appears: before the desktop, as a notification banner, on a Windows welcome screen, in Settings, or in an account or OneDrive dialog. Those details determine the right fix.

  • Before you reach the desktop: Windows may still require a step in its initial setup flow.
  • After you reach the desktop: the message may be a welcome experience or optional recommendation rather than a required setup task.
  • If it names an account, backup, or OneDrive: decide whether you want the service before changing its settings.

Microsoft describes the Windows welcome experience as a way to show new features and suggestions after updates or sign-in. See Microsoft’s guidance on managing notifications in Windows.

If you can use the desktop, check welcome and setup suggestions

  1. Open Settings > System > Notifications.
  2. Expand Additional settings.
  3. Review the available options for Windows welcome experiences and suggestions, and turn off only the options you do not want. The wording and available controls can differ by Windows 11 release.
  4. If the message arrived as a notification banner, dismiss it. For recurring alerts from an app, adjust that app’s notifications rather than disabling all Windows notifications.

Turning off a welcome suggestion is not the same as completing an unfinished setup step. If the prompt returns in a Settings page or account dialog, follow the branch that matches its exact request.

If Windows is still in initial setup

Follow the step shown on screen. Windows device setup can include accepting license terms, connecting to the internet, signing in or creating an account, and other setup choices. Microsoft says most settings can be changed after setup, and the Get Started app can help with device setup and learning about Windows. For Windows Home and Pro, Microsoft states: “An internet connection is required to finish setting up a device running Windows Home or Pro.” See Microsoft Support’s connectivity guidance for Windows setup.

If the flow cannot continue, check that the PC has a working internet connection. Do not treat a later optional account or backup offer as proof that first-run setup is incomplete.

If the prompt asks you to use a Microsoft account

A Microsoft account is associated with an email address and Microsoft services. A local account is specific to that PC and does not require an internet connection to sign in. Choosing between them is a separate decision; changing account type is not necessary just to suppress a reminder.

To review or change account type, open Settings > Accounts > Your info. Microsoft documents switching between a Microsoft account and a local account there. A Microsoft account can support services and settings synchronization; a local account keeps sign-in device-specific. See Microsoft’s account guidance and choose based on the services and sync behavior you want.

If the prompt offers Windows Backup or OneDrive

Windows Backup preference sync and OneDrive folder backup are separate controls. Review them independently instead of turning them off as a blanket fix for a setup reminder.

Windows Backup preferences

Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup to review configurable Windows preferences and synchronization. Turning a setting off changes what is synchronized; it does not itself repair a notification. Microsoft explains the available privacy and settings controls at Windows backup and sync settings.

OneDrive folder backup

OneDrive folder backup is managed separately in OneDrive settings. If you stop backing up a folder, newly added files in that folder will no longer be backed up to OneDrive through that setting. Review the folder choices before changing them; see Microsoft’s OneDrive folder-backup guidance.

If the prompt mentions recommendations or offers

Review Settings > Personalization > Device usage. The selected usage categories can influence recommendations, offers, and tips, and you can change those selections later. This is relevant when the message is a recommendation rather than a required setup step. See Microsoft’s Device usage guidance.

If the message keeps returning

Before trying more disruptive fixes, capture the exact prompt text and note where it appears, whether you can reach the desktop, and what you selected previously. If you need help diagnosing it, include your Windows edition, version and build, and say whether the PC is managed by a workplace or school. Those details distinguish a Windows welcome notification from an organization-managed setup or account flow.

A generic setup reminder does not justify registry edits or third-party repair tools. Use the setting that matches the prompt, and leave unrelated notifications, account choices, and backup controls unchanged.
