When the Find My Device map for a Windows 11 PC keeps showing an old position, the usual causes are four settings or account conditions: the feature was not turned on before the PC went missing, the PC is not signed in with the intended personal Microsoft account and an administrator account, device-wide location is off, or the PC is not listed under the account you are checking. Work through those checks first. Microsoft’s published guidance does not give a guaranteed refresh interval or a dedicated repair for a stale map, so there is no fixed wait time to rely on.
What must already be true
Find My Device depends on three conditions that you cannot fix retroactively. If one is missing, the map will not behave as you expect no matter what you change afterwards.
- The feature was enabled in advance. Microsoft states that Find my device must be turned on before the device can be found. Turning it on after the PC is lost does not establish that the PC can report where it was earlier. (Microsoft Support: Find and lock a lost Windows device)
- The right account and role are in use. Find my device works with a personal Microsoft account, and the Windows account used on the PC must be an administrator. Microsoft’s wording is that the feature “only works if you sign in to your device as an administrator using your Microsoft account and if the device’s location setting is turned on.” (Microsoft Support: Essential services and connected experiences for Windows)
- Device location is on. This is a device-wide setting that an administrator controls. Turning on an individual app’s location permission does not compensate for device location being off.
Checks to run in order
- Confirm the account and its role. In Settings, check that the PC is signed in with your personal Microsoft account and that this account is an administrator. A work or school account, or a standard user account, will not support Find my device for this purpose.
- Confirm Find my device is enabled. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device and check that the setting is on. If it was off when you needed it, record that fact; the map cannot show a location the feature never recorded.
- Confirm device location is on. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location and make sure the device-wide Location services switch is on. If the switch is off, the map has no current location to send.
- Check the device list on the web. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/devices with the same personal account, open Find My Device, and confirm the PC appears in the list. If it is missing, the PC is probably signed in with a different Microsoft account. Microsoft’s device-management guidance covers how devices are associated with an account (Manage devices used with your Microsoft account).
- Select the PC and choose Find. In the Find My Device page, select the correct PC and choose Find. Note the time of the request, then check the map again after a few minutes. Keep in mind that Microsoft does not publish how quickly a new position will appear, so an unchanged map shortly after a request is not by itself a sign of failure.
How to read the map
Windows does not rely on a single sensor. Depending on the hardware and conditions, the location service may draw on:

- GPS, if the PC has a suitable receiver
- Nearby wireless access points and routers
- Cell towers, on devices with cellular connectivity
- The IP address of the connection
- A default location
Accuracy varies by device and conditions. A result based on an IP address or a default location can be far from the PC’s actual position. A coarse result therefore does not prove that a GPS receiver is missing or broken, and a PC that has no GPS can still be located approximately. Microsoft says de-identified location information may be shared with its location service partners HERE and Skyhook to improve location services; this does not mean a precise position is always available (Microsoft Support: Windows location service and privacy).

If the map is still stale after every check
If the prerequisites are satisfied, the PC appears in the device list, and the map still does not change, the next step is Microsoft Support. The Find my device guidance does not describe a special repair for a stale map, so give support the account, the PC’s name as shown in the device list, the time you ran Find, and which settings you verified. If the PC may have been stolen
Each attempt to locate the device shows a notification to anyone using it, so a lookup is not silent. If you believe the PC has been stolen, Microsoft recommends contacting local law enforcement and your insurance company. The same Microsoft page documents a remote Lock option, which you can use from the account web page to secure the device while you pursue recovery.
