If an open-source dependency appears abandoned, first find every place it is used and identify the exact versions in your product. Then assess maintenance, security, and exposure before choosing whether to remove it, replace it, help maintain it, fork it, or retain it temporarily with clear controls. Abandonment increases maintenance risk; it does not by itself prove that a particular release is vulnerable.
Verify that the dependency is actually abandoned
A quiet repository is a warning sign, not a verdict. Check the project’s release history and issue activity, maintainer announcements, stated support commitments, and whether maintainers are still responding to security reports. Consider maintainer diversity, dependency management, API stability, licensing, and whether the package remains suitable for your use. OpenSSF’s evaluation guide includes activity and release checks within the previous 12 months as examples—not a universal definition or cutoff for abandonment.
Verify that the package source is authentic, especially if a new maintainer, successor, or fork is being proposed. Confirm who controls the repository and how releases are published rather than relying on a similar name or popularity alone. The OpenSSF guide summarizes the risk: “Unmaintained software is a risk; most software needs continuous maintenance.”
Map where and how you use it
Before changing anything, establish what your product actually ships. Identify direct dependencies—the packages your project declares—and transitive dependencies pulled in by those packages. Record exact resolved versions, where they are used, and which built artifacts contain them. The UK Home Office’s guidance on using open-source software in products recommends understanding the dependency tree, tying built artifacts to precise versions, and generating a software bill of materials (SBOM) during builds.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check manifests and lockfiles, build outputs, container images, and deployed artifacts where relevant.
- Determine which features invoke the package and whether that functionality is reachable by users or exposed to untrusted input.
- Record the package’s license and any obligations relevant to how your product is distributed.
Knowing where a package runs helps distinguish a component present in a build from functionality that is actually reachable in your product. That distinction informs prioritization, but does not replace vulnerability analysis.
Assess security risk in your product
Check relevant vulnerability advisories and the project’s security-response practices. Look for evidence of timely fixes, support for older releases, and whether the version you use is affected. A search that finds no advisory is not proof that the component is safe: an issue may be undiscovered, unreported, or not yet recorded.

There is no single severity formula in the cited guidance. Document what the component does in your product, whether potentially affected functionality is reachable, how exposed it is, and the consequences of a failure. Use that context alongside vulnerability information to set priority. If you decide a known critical issue cannot be exploited in your product, CISA and the FBI recommend that manufacturers publish their rationale; see their software supply-chain recommendations.
Choose a response that fits the dependency
Once you understand the dependency and its risk, select a path deliberately. Each option shifts maintenance work and risk in a different way.

Remove it
Remove the package if you no longer need its functionality, an existing component can cover the use, or a safe implementation without the dependency is practical. Fewer dependencies can reduce supply-chain exposure, but rewriting functionality can introduce bugs or vulnerabilities of its own. Compare the risk of removal with the risk of keeping the package; do not assume custom code is automatically safer.
Replace it
Choose a maintained alternative if it supports the required behavior and has a compatible license. Compare candidates on:

- Required API, features, and behavior.
- Maintenance evidence and security-response practices.
- Known vulnerabilities and the health of transitive dependencies.
- Authenticity and artifact provenance.
- License compatibility, secure defaults, and documentation.
- Migration work and the cost of maintaining the replacement.
Popularity alone does not establish that a package is secure, suitable, or cheaper to maintain. Evaluate the candidate against the same criteria as the dependency it would replace.
Help the upstream project continue
If maintainers are still engaged or the project can coordinate a handover, consider contributing code, reviews, security work, or maintenance capacity. CISA and the FBI recommend selecting well-maintained projects and contributing to ongoing maintenance where appropriate. First confirm the project’s governance and responsibilities: a contribution may not be accepted, and it does not guarantee that maintainers will resume work.

Maintain a downstream fork
A fork can be appropriate when the code is essential and removal or migration is impractical. Before taking responsibility, assign people to review changes, handle vulnerability reports, publish releases, and track upstream. Keep the fork’s changes small: OpenSSF cautions that downstream modifications can accumulate and make later updates harder. Decide how upstream fixes will be evaluated and incorporated.
Retain it temporarily with controls
Keeping the dependency can be a reasonable short-term choice when the risk is understood and someone owns the decision. Record why it remains, which versions are deployed, and what would trigger a change. Monitor for vulnerabilities and end-of-life notices, scan the package and its transitive dependencies, and document whether known issues are exploitable in your product. Set a date or condition to reassess rather than letting a temporary exception become permanent by default.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Control the change and future builds
Make dependency changes through your package manager and preserve a complete record of what the build resolves. For applications, use lockfiles where the ecosystem supports them, and use hashes where available. These help make builds reproducible and can help detect later tampering. Cache dependencies from trusted sources in your build system; CISA and the FBI caution against updating products or customer systems directly from unverified public sources.
- Review the change. Inspect the proposed direct and transitive dependency changes, including versions and sources.
- Run automated tests. Test functional and security behavior after a dependency change, as OpenSSF recommends.
- Test relevant environments. Exercise the platforms, configurations, and deployment paths that matter to your users.
- Record the result. Update the dependency record or SBOM and preserve patch provenance if you maintain a fork or apply a backport.
- Monitor and reassess. Assign an owner to track advisories, upstream changes, and changes in product exposure or available alternatives.
GitHub’s dependency review is one example of a pull-request check: it can present dependency changes, release dates, usage information, and known vulnerability data. Availability depends on repository type and enabled security features; its review action can be configured to block flagged changes. Other platforms and processes can provide dependency review as well.
When upgrading is not practical
If a critical component cannot be upgraded or replaced, consider whether a vulnerability fix can be backported to the version you need, either downstream or in a stable or long-term-support branch. OpenSSF recommends considering backports in this situation and, where practical, contributing the fix or support upstream. Track where the patch came from, what it changes, and how the resulting build was tested.
