Stop retrying the same request. First identify whether you hit a model, tool, session, weekly, or context-window limit, then record the reset time shown in the provider’s Usage panel. Save the prompt and essential work locally before changing models or services. If the task is urgent, use an offered fallback model, an eligible reset, or metered credits with a firm spending cap; otherwise wait for the displayed refresh.
Do these six things before sending another prompt
- Read the exact error and open Usage. Record the quota name and the displayed reset time. A five-hour session limit, a weekly allowance, a tool limit, a model-specific quota, and a context-window limit require different fixes.
- Preserve your work. Copy the last prompt, important files or excerpts, decisions, constraints, and the assistant’s latest useful answer into a local note. Do this before switching providers or starting a new conversation.
- Check the account that is actually signed in. Confirm the email, workspace, subscription, and selected model. A personal account and a work workspace can show different allowances.
- Choose according to urgency. If the work can wait, stop sending prompts and use the displayed refresh time. If it cannot, select a documented fallback model, another assistant, an eligible paid reset, or usage credits.
- Protect cost and privacy. Set a spending cap before enabling metered credits. When moving sensitive material, transfer only the minimum context needed and review the destination service’s settings.
- Escalate a failed purchase or unexplained block. Contact the provider while signed in and include the timestamp, product, plan, exact error text, and screenshots. Do not assume repeated retries will accelerate a reset; they can consume remaining allowance without changing the schedule.
What “you’ve reached your limit” can mean
Model or message quota
A provider may cap requests to one advanced model while leaving another model available. The message may say that access is paused until a particular time. Upgrading can change the allowance, but it does not necessarily remove every other restriction on files, images, voice, data analysis, or other tools.
Tool quota
File uploads, image generation, voice, browsing-style tools, and data-analysis features can have separate counters. You may still be able to send ordinary text while one of these tools is paused. Check the Usage panel rather than inferring the cause from a generic error.
Session or weekly allowance
A session allowance replenishes on a short rolling schedule, commonly five hours in the services described below. A weekly allowance is a separate ceiling. Waiting five hours will not necessarily restore access after the weekly ceiling has been reached.

Context-window limit
Context capacity is the amount of conversation and attached material the model can consider in one request. It is not the same as an account usage quota. A long chat can fail even when you still have messages available. Start a fresh conversation with a compact summary, the current requirements, and only the files needed for the next step.
Provider-specific recovery steps
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s current Free Tier FAQ says free users can have unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse safeguards, while file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools have separate limits. A separate Free-tier GPT limit can pause GPT access until the reset time shown in the product. Upgrading to Plus, Pro, or Business resets Free-tier rates, according to that FAQ; it does not imply that every tool has unlimited use.
- Open the in-product Usage information and identify whether the message concerns a GPT, a tool, or another allowance.
- If it is a Free-tier GPT pause and you can wait, stop prompting until the displayed time.
- If you need to continue immediately, use another model that the interface offers, or upgrade only after checking the recurring cost and the allowance you actually need.
For Work and Codex, OpenAI’s Help Center describes an instant reset for eligible personal Plus and Pro accounts. The option appears in desktop Usage settings or in an in-app weekly-limit offer, and availability varies by account. A completed purchase immediately restores both five-hour and weekly usage. The normal weekly allowance is pulled forward, the new weekly period begins with the first request after the reset, and the next automatic reset is seven days later.

Claude
Anthropic documents two paid-plan limits: a session limit that resets every five hours and weekly limits that reset once a week. Consumption depends on conversation length and complexity, enabled features, the selected model, and effort level. Claude on the web, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop share the same allowance, so moving between those surfaces does not create a fresh quota. Long conversations can consume more usage than short, focused ones.
- On the web or in Claude Desktop, open Settings > Usage and read which limit is exhausted and when it refreshes.
- If a Reset for free control is offered, select it only when you accept that the action cannot be undone. It restores either the five-hour or weekly limit immediately, according to the offer.
- Do not expect to find that control directly in Claude Mobile or in terminal/IDE Claude Code. After activation, the restored allowance is shared across the account’s supported surfaces.
- For the next task, start a new conversation when the old thread is long and use a project structure efficiently rather than repeatedly resending a massive history.
Paid Pro, Max 5x, and Max 20x users can enable usage credits on the web. Once included limits are fully consumed, requests switch to pay-as-you-go pricing at standard API rates and continue until the monthly spending cap is reached or the credit balance runs out. Set a conservative cap before enabling the feature, monitor usage, and choose an efficient model. Credits do not change the ordinary reset timetable.
Anthropic’s 2026 documentation lists a maximum context window of 1 million tokens for its newest paid models. That figure describes how much material a request can hold; it is separate from the account’s session and weekly usage quota. A conversation can therefore hit a usage limit, a context limit, or both for different reasons.
Gemini Apps
Google describes Gemini Apps limits as compute-based. Prompt complexity, model and feature selection, and chat length all affect consumption. Limits refresh every five hours until a weekly limit is reached. Subscribers who hit a model limit can continue with Flash-Lite, upgrade to a higher Google AI plan, or wait for the model limit to refresh.

- Open the Gemini web app and go to Settings > Usage Limits.
- Read whether the notice concerns the selected model, a feature, or the broader weekly allowance.
- If Flash-Lite is offered and the task is tolerant of a capability change, continue there rather than repeatedly retrying the exhausted model.
- Compare the cost of an upgrade with the frequency and importance of the work; a higher plan does not turn compute-based limits into an unlimited promise.
Google’s published comparisons express relative limits rather than guaranteed message counts: AI Plus provides 2x the standard limits, AI Pro provides 4x, and AI Ultra provides 5x or 20x AI Pro limits depending on the subscription. The exact allowance can change with model, feature, prompt, and chat length, so use the Usage Limits panel as the authoritative value for your account.

Move a task without losing its reasoning
Create a compact handoff
Use the local note you made at the start as a handoff, not a full transcript. Include the objective, audience, hard requirements, decisions already made, unresolved questions, file names and relevant excerpts, and the last accepted output. Mark assumptions separately from verified facts. This reduces token use and makes a different model less likely to follow obsolete instructions.
Transfer sensitive material selectively
Remove credentials, private customer data, confidential attachments, and unrelated conversation history. Replace an entire document with the smallest excerpt that answers the next question, unless the task genuinely requires the original. Check the destination account and retention or training controls before uploading anything.
Recover from a context-window failure
- Ask the original assistant, if it still accepts short prompts, for a structured summary of decisions and open issues.
- Open a new conversation rather than repeatedly appending to the overlong one.
- Paste the summary, the exact next deliverable, and only the necessary source material.
- Ask the new conversation to list what it is relying on before it produces a long answer. Correct omissions early.
Troubleshoot a limit that does not clear
The displayed reset time has passed
- Refresh the Usage panel and verify that the device is signed into the intended account or workspace.
- Check whether a weekly, tool, or model quota is still active even though a five-hour timer ended.
- Confirm that the product has not changed models or features between attempts.
- Capture the current error, timestamp, plan, and screenshots before contacting support.
A paid reset or upgrade did not restore access
Do not buy repeatedly. Confirm that the payment completed and that the purchase was made on the same account showing the limit. Then contact the provider while signed in with the transaction time, product surface, plan, error text, and screenshots. The account may have received a reset for one quota while another tool or weekly limit remains active.

The fallback is available but produces weaker work
Reduce the immediate task to a smaller, verifiable step: extract facts, classify items, or draft an outline. Keep the high-stakes synthesis for the original model after its quota returns. State the capability change in your handoff so a later model does not mistake a provisional answer for the final one.

Monitor the right counter
Check Usage before a long run, not only after an error. Note the session and weekly timers, tool-specific counters, and any context warning. A long conversation, high effort setting, complex prompt, or feature-heavy request can consume more allowance than a short text exchange.
Design shorter, resumable conversations
Keep one objective per thread, periodically save a concise decision log, and start a new thread when the history becomes mostly background. Projects can organize durable instructions and files, but they do not create a second account allowance.

Put a boundary around metered use
If you enable Claude usage credits or any comparable paid continuation, choose a conservative monthly cap first, monitor the running total, and disable or pause the feature when the work is no longer urgent. Standard API-rate billing is metered; it is not the same as an unlimited subscription.

Choose quickly with these scenarios
The deadline is tomorrow and the reset is in two hours
Save the work, use an offered fallback model for low-risk preparation, and reserve the original model for the final step after refresh. Paying for a reset is reasonable only when the value of immediate completion exceeds the stated charge and you have confirmed eligibility.
The deadline is today and the weekly limit is exhausted
A five-hour wait may not help. Look for an explicitly documented reset, a higher plan, or metered credits; otherwise transfer a minimum-context handoff to another service after reviewing privacy settings. Keep the original transcript locally because switching services does not restore the original allowance.
The warning appears after attaching a large file
First determine whether the attachment triggered a tool quota or a context-window limit. Remove unnecessary pages, extract the relevant sections, and retry in a new conversation. Do not assume that upgrading a text-message allowance will increase a separate file or analysis quota.

Treat an exhaustion notice as a diagnosis problem, not a prompt-writing problem. Identify the counter, preserve the work, and use the least expensive path that meets the deadline. Wait when the displayed refresh is acceptable; otherwise use only a documented fallback, reset, upgrade, or credit option whose cost and privacy consequences you understand.
