When an AI-generated pull request (PR) fails continuous integration (CI) or includes code beyond the request, do not merge it just because the agent offers an explanation or an automated reviewer approves it. Read the failure evidence, compare the full diff with the task, request the smallest justified correction, and check the latest commit before deciding whether to merge.
Start by diagnosing the failed check
A red CI status is a symptom, not proof that the changed code is at fault. Open the failed job and identify the command, stage, and exact error or failing test. Then determine whether the evidence points to the patch, test setup, branch freshness, or workflow configuration.
- Read the job output. Record the failing test or command and the relevant error. If the job did not run or report a result, inspect workflow triggers, branch and path filters, permissions, and the check’s status on the pull request.
- Reproduce when practical. Use the repository’s documented command and environment where possible. Distinguish a reproducible code failure from a flaky test or infrastructure problem based on the available evidence; do not dismiss a red status without understanding it.
- Check that the result applies to the current change. Required checks must pass for the latest commit. GitHub also documents cases where skipped or ineligible workflows do not report a required check, leaving it pending; merge queues may require a workflow trigger for the
merge_groupevent. See GitHub’s troubleshooting guide for required status checks.
Do not claim to have run a test unless you or a trusted automated job actually ran it. If the failure is environmental, flaky, or caused by workflow configuration, document that evidence and resolve the check appropriately rather than changing product code to conceal it.
Review the whole diff for scope
Read every changed file against the original request and the repository’s conventions. A patch can pass CI and still do more than the requested work. Ask whether each change is necessary to deliver the stated behavior.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Look for speculative features, unrelated refactors, unnecessary abstractions, and broad formatting churn.
- Check for new dependencies or public-interface changes that the request did not require.
- Inspect tests for weakened assertions, missing cases, or errors that are swallowed instead of handled.
- Confirm that the implementation matches the requested behavior rather than merely satisfying one test.
Research on more than 33,000 agent-authored PRs across five coding agents found that unmerged PRs tended to be larger, touch more files, and often fail CI. In a qualitative review of 600 PRs, researchers also identified unwanted features and agent misalignment among rejection patterns. These are findings about the studied PRs, not a rule that every large change or AI-authored patch is faulty. Study details.
Ask for a focused correction
Once you have a concrete cause, give the agent the failing check and relevant log or reproduction, describe the expected behavior, and state constraints. For example: “The parse_date test fails with this error: [relevant output]. Make the smallest change that handles the documented input. Do not add dependencies, reformat unrelated files, or change the public interface. Run the relevant test and report the result.”

Specific constraints help keep a repair aligned with the request; they are practical guidance, not a guarantee that an agent will produce a correct patch. A study of 306 non-merged PRs in the AIDev sample reported that 46.41% of fixes were rejected, citing several reasons including incorrect implementations, CI or test failures, incomplete work, and low-priority fixes. That percentage applies to the study’s sample, not to AI-generated code generally. Study details.
Validate the correction on the latest commit
- Inspect the follow-up diff file by file. Confirm that it addresses the diagnosed cause and does not introduce unrelated edits.
- Run the repository’s relevant tests and, where applicable, lint, build, and security checks. Review the output rather than relying only on the agent’s summary.
- Confirm that required checks have completed successfully on the latest commit and are attached to the PR. A green result from an earlier commit does not validate a later change.
- Make the merge decision based on both scope and correctness. Request another narrow change or close the PR if it remains out of scope or unverified.
GitHub’s guidance says required checks must pass before a PR can be merged, but CI is only one part of review: passing checks do not establish that a change belongs in the product.

Use automated review as an aid, not a verdict
GitHub describes Copilot code review as a way to identify issues and suggest fixes. Its own documentation cautions that the approval assessment alone does not count toward merge requirements. Keep the repository’s required checks and independent human review in place.
GitHub also says a push to a PR that Copilot has reviewed does not automatically trigger another review unless automatic review is configured; a reviewer can request one manually. Treat any review comments as leads to verify against the code and task, not proof that the implementation is correct. Product features and availability depend on GitHub’s current plan and organization settings, so consult GitHub’s current Copilot code review instructions.

For GitHub’s cloud coding agent, documented safeguards include CodeQL checks, secret scanning, and checks on newly introduced dependencies against the GitHub Advisory Database for malware advisories and high- or critical-severity vulnerabilities. GitHub says draft agent PRs require human review and merge. Those are platform-specific safeguards, not a guarantee of correctness or a replacement for the checks your project needs.
