Check whether the problem is personal taste or a suspected fault, then contact the wine club promptly and follow its current policy. Some clubs offer a remedy for a bottle you dislike; others limit help to bottles that are faulty, damaged, or incorrect. A refund or replacement is not automatic.
First, decide whether you dislike the style or suspect a problem
Tell the club which situation applies. A wine that is too sweet, too tannic, or simply not to your taste is different from one that seems corked, oxidized, spoiled, damaged in transit, or different from what you ordered. Clubs may handle these complaints under separate policies.
- Taste mismatch: Describe the style or feature you disliked. Ask whether the club can record that preference for future selections.
- Possible fault, damage, or wrong bottle: Describe what seems wrong and ask what evidence the club needs. Keep the bottle and packaging until you hear whether it wants photos or the bottle retained for inspection.
Check the club’s policy before assuming a remedy
Look at the club’s current satisfaction guarantee, bottle-quality policy, and the terms for your shipment. Check the reporting deadline, any storage or consumption conditions, and whether the remedy is a refund, credit, replacement, exchange, or no remedy for a taste preference. The policies below are examples from individual providers, not rules that apply to every club.

These examples illustrate why the specific club’s current terms matter. They do not establish a general right to return an opened or disliked bottle; applicable consumer and alcohol rules can also depend on your country.

Contact support with the details it needs
- Find the current reporting method and deadline. Use the club’s stated support channel and check the policy for the shipment at issue.
- Identify the order and bottle. Include the order or shipment reference, wine name, and delivery date.
- Explain the issue plainly. For a taste mismatch, say what you disliked. For suspected fault, damage, or an incorrect bottle, describe the signs and attach photos if requested.
- Ask what remedy is available. Ask whether the policy allows a refund, credit, replacement, or exchange, and whether the club needs the bottle or packaging kept.
Contact the club promptly rather than waiting until the next shipment. Deadlines and evidence requirements vary, and the examples above are service terms—not a universal deadline.
Tell the club what to change for future shipments
If the issue was taste, ask whether it can record the preference or let you rate the bottle, filter styles or varietals, or customize a future shipment. Controls differ by service: The California Wine Club, for example, says members may request red-only or white-only shipments. Be specific about what you want to avoid or receive; the club can tell you which preferences it can apply.

Decide whether to pause, skip, change, or cancel
If you do not want another shipment, check the membership settings and terms before the next order cutoff. A shipment may already be in process, and credits can be affected by cancellation: Firstleaf says its bottle credits expire when membership is cancelled or terminated. Confirm the timing and any credit consequences with your own club before making the change.
