If your Samsung Galaxy overheats and will not turn on, unplug it, stop using it, remove its case, and let it cool naturally before trying to charge or restart it. Once it is cool, check for damage; only if it looks safe should you try a compatible Samsung-certified charger and then a forced restart.
1. Stop using the phone and let it cool
Disconnect the charger and remove the case, if there is one. Leave the Galaxy in a safe, ventilated place and allow it to cool on its own. Do not charge it again until it has cooled. Samsung’s guidance is direct: “If you receive the ‘Device cooling down’ message, put your phone or tablet down and do not use it until it has cooled sufficiently.” Samsung’s overheating guidance also notes that a cooling safeguard may dim the screen, limit performance, close apps, pause charging, or disconnect wireless connections.
Do not put the phone in a refrigerator or freezer, apply ice, or use water to cool it. These methods are not recommended and can expose the device to moisture or condensation.
2. Check for damage before connecting power
After the phone has cooled, inspect the phone, charging cable, adapter, and charging port. Look for visible damage, moisture, debris, corrosion, or a raised or swollen-looking case or screen. Check that the charger and cable are compatible with your model and are not damaged. Samsung warns that damaged or incompatible charging accessories can cause charging problems and overheating. If the phone appears swollen, wet, or damaged—or the cable or adapter is damaged—do not reconnect power or attempt a DIY repair. Arrange professional service instead. The cited guidance does not provide a detailed emergency procedure for a swollen battery, so avoid handling or opening the device.
3. Charge it briefly if it looks undamaged
If there is no visible damage and the battery may be empty, connect a compatible Samsung-certified charger and leave the phone for several minutes. A completely depleted battery may not show an immediate charging symbol or power on straight away. Samsung UK advises letting a fully drained phone reach 1% before trying to turn it on; that instruction is from Samsung’s UK charging guidance, so follow the advice for your model and region if it differs.

Use the charger and cable only after the phone is cool and you have checked them for damage. A replacement accessory cannot fix internal phone damage.
4. Try a forced restart
If the phone remains unresponsive after cooling and a short charge, try a forced restart. Samsung’s current India instructions say to press and hold the Side/Power key and Volume Down together for at least seven seconds. Release the buttons if the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears. Consult Samsung’s no-power instructions for the current steps.

Button names and timing can vary by Galaxy model. If this combination does not work, check the instructions for your exact model rather than repeatedly trying unverified button sequences. Samsung’s Philippines guidance says a correctly performed forced restart does not erase information; it is different from a factory reset.
5. Know when to stop and seek service
Stop troubleshooting and contact Samsung Support or an authorized service center if the phone heats up again, remains dead after the safe checks above, or shows visible damage. Samsung recommends service when overheating continues or power-on trouble is unresolved. Overheating support and power-on support provide regional contact and service options.

Why a Galaxy may overheat and fail to start
Possible explanations include a temporary software freeze, a fully depleted battery, a charging issue, or hardware or circuitry trouble. Heat can also be associated with intensive use, charging, a hot or enclosed environment, damaged or non-genuine accessories, or foreign objects on a wireless charging pad. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis; the symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.
