If your laptop fan is still loud or the computer still overheats after cleaning, check the full airflow path, workload and model-supported diagnostics before attempting more cleaning. A clear exterior vent does not prove that the internal heat sink is clear or that the fan is healthy. If the fan grinds or shrieks, a diagnostic reports an error, or the laptop keeps overheating or shutting down, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician.
First, work out whether the noise is expected or abnormal
Fan speed normally rises when the processor or graphics hardware is busy. Gaming, video editing and file conversion can make a fan noticeably louder; the useful clue is whether the noise tracks demanding work or continues during light use. A brief loud fan at startup can also be normal on some HP systems, but behavior varies by model.
Note whether the laptop is unusually hot, has slowed down, restarted or shut down, and whether the problem started immediately after cleaning. These details help distinguish a workload-related fan from a cooling or hardware problem; the symptoms alone do not identify a specific failed part.
Check the entire airflow path and laptop placement
Shut the laptop down before cleaning or repositioning it. Place it on a hard, level surface, and make sure its intake and exhaust openings have room to breathe. Soft bedding, clothing or a cluttered desk can obstruct airflow even when the visible vent looks clean. Find the vent diagram for your exact model: some laptops exhaust near the display hinge rather than from the sides.

Dust or hair may remain inside the fan or heat sink after an exterior wipe. ASUS advises disconnecting power before cleaning and using canned compressed air at a distance; excessive air pressure can damage fan blades. Do not use a high-pressure compressor or aggressively spin the blades. ASUS also says not to invert the can while spraying. If reaching internal dust requires disassembly, check the model-specific service instructions and warranty terms, or use manufacturer service.
A laptop stand or cooling pad can elevate the device and improve clearance from the surface. It is an optional airflow aid, not a repair for a failed fan or an internal blockage. ASUS gives a general ambient operating range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F); check your own model’s manual for its applicable limits.

Check whether an app or power setting is driving the fan
Use your operating system’s process monitor to see whether a demanding or unexpected task is keeping CPU use high. In Windows, open Task Manager and sort processes by CPU use. Close only a process you recognize and do not need; if the usage remains unexpectedly high, investigate the app rather than ending unfamiliar system tasks. LG notes that malware or other CPU overload can raise fan speed.
Use only thermal or fan controls supported for your laptop. Options vary: Dell thermal controls are available on select systems, ASUS modes differ by model, and MSI describes fan modes in MSI Center. Do not assume that a particular manufacturer’s app or setting is available on every laptop. If you update BIOS, firmware, drivers or Windows, follow the instructions on the support page for your exact model. An update may address a software or configuration issue, but it will not fix a mechanical defect.

Run the laptop maker’s diagnostic
Use the diagnostic offered for your model, if available. Menu names and tool availability differ, so follow the manufacturer’s current model-specific directions. Record any error and validation codes before contacting support.
- Dell: Dell documents SupportAssist or ePSA diagnostics. Its instructions include restarting, opening the one-time boot menu and selecting Diagnostics. If a test fails, give support the displayed error and validation codes.
- ASUS: On supported devices, MyASUS System Diagnosis includes a Fan check. ASUS recommends service if diagnostics detect an issue.
- MSI: MSI documents a Hardware Diagnosis scan in MSI Center. Contact MSI if the issue remains.
A passing fan test is useful information, but it does not prove that every cause of overheating has been resolved.

Know when to stop troubleshooting and get service
Stop DIY checks and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician if the fan grinds or shrieks, visibly wobbles, fails a diagnostic, or the laptop continues overheating or shutting down after airflow and workload checks. LG says grinding or shrieking can indicate fan-bearing abrasion and recommends technician inspection. ASUS recommends service for diagnostic faults, and Dell advises contacting technical support when overheating problems persist.
