If a wildfire, smoke, or other emergency closes a road, stop before the barricade and do not try to drive around it. Check current instructions from local emergency officials and the transportation authority, then use only a route they have confirmed is open. If officials recommend or order evacuation, leave promptly by the designated route.
What to do first
- Stop at the closure. Obey barricades and directions from law enforcement, fire officials, and transportation personnel. Do not use a shoulder, private road, or off-road track to get around a closure.
- Check official updates. Look at local emergency alerts, the incident’s official updates, and the transportation authority’s road-closure or detour information. In the United States, call 511 for road and travel-route information and check InciWeb for incident-specific wildfire updates. These are starting points, not confirmation that a particular road is open or safe.
- Follow the designated detour or evacuation route. Confirm that it is currently open before taking it. Fire and smoke conditions can change, so do not choose a route only because a map app shows it as shorter or faster.
- Evacuate promptly when officials recommend or order it. Waiting can increase the chance of encountering fire, smoke, or traffic congestion. Do not wait for a generic map app to contradict local instructions.
Can you drive around a fire road closure?
No. A roadblock is a hard boundary, not a suggestion. Do not bypass it, drive into a wildfire, or go off-road to get around the fire. New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency gives the same practical warning: “Never try to bypass roadblocks or go off-road to ‘get around a fire’.” The authorities responsible for the incident determine which roads and routes are open.
How to find reliable road and fire updates
Use information from the authorities managing the incident and the roads, and favor the newest update for the specific location you need. An incident page may explain the fire situation; a transportation agency’s service is the place to verify road closures and detours. Social posts or a map’s routing suggestion are not substitutes for official open-road status.

- Elsewhere: Follow the emergency-management and transportation agencies responsible for the affected area. Local authorities’ instructions govern each incident.
Road status and detours can change rapidly. A general information page or an older alert cannot establish that a route is open now.

What if smoke makes the road hard to see?
Do not drive into smoke so thick that you cannot see through it. If you are already traveling and conditions become unsafe, prioritize getting away from danger and follow directions from officials. There is no single maneuver that is safe for every road layout or visibility condition, so do not rely on a universal turn-around or stopping instruction in place of local guidance.
If officials say a road is open and travel through smoky conditions is necessary, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises keeping vehicle windows closed and setting the air system to recirculate during high smoke. This reduces exposure; it does not make a fire zone or a closed road safe to enter.

What if your planned evacuation route is blocked?
Do not go through the roadblock or improvise an off-road detour. Stop before the closure, check current emergency alerts and transportation updates, and follow the alternate route or other instructions issued by local officials. Because fire behavior and road conditions vary, no route can be declared universally safe without current local information.

- Check local emergency alerts and road conditions before departure, especially when fire or smoke is affecting the area.
- Know the official evacuation instructions and have a backup route in mind, while confirming that any route you use is open.
- Keep an emergency supply kit in your vehicle, as the National Weather Service advises.
- Keep necessary medication accessible. The CDC advises extra care for children and people with asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or pregnancy during wildfire smoke events.
If someone must be outside in unhealthy smoke, the EPA says an appropriate particle-filtering respirator, such as a NIOSH-approved N95, may reduce exposure to fine particles. It is not protection for driving into heavy smoke or entering a fire area. Follow local health advice; this is not individualized medical guidance.
