Those symptoms have different causes. A mod missing from a plugin list may still be installed, while a mod listed in Vortex may not yet be deployed into the game.
Start by identifying what is missing
- Missing from the Mods list: Check that the manager is using the Fallout game and profile you expect. Then look for the mod’s installed entry and any original archive or staged files on disk.
- In Mods, but missing from Plugins or load order: Check whether the mod contains an ESP or ESM plugin. Many texture replacers and other asset-only mods do not. Vortex’s FAQ explains that its Plugins screen shows deployed plugin files only: Vortex FAQ.
- Listed in the manager, but not affecting the game: Check whether it is enabled and deployed. In Vortex, installing a mod and linking its files into the game are separate steps.
Check Vortex’s mod status and deployment
In Vortex, open the Mods screen and inspect the mod’s status. If it is disabled and you want to use it, enable it. If deployment is pending or automatic deployment is off, deploy the mods and check whether the expected files or plugin appear.
Vortex extracts mod files into a separate mod directory, then links active files into the game directory during deployment. Disabled mods have their links removed when deployment runs. The Vortex FAQ describes this distinction and notes that the Plugins screen displays deployed files: Vortex FAQ.
Do not use Purge as the first recovery step. Purge removes deployed links from the game directory without uninstalling the staged mods; deploying again can restore the links. Use it only when you have a reason to clear deployed files and understand that it changes the game directory’s linked files.

If the entire Plugins tab is missing in Vortex
For Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, or Fallout 4, a missing Plugins tab can indicate that Vortex’s load-order extension did not initialize. Check the extension before reinstalling Vortex:
- In Vortex, open Extensions and enable Show bundled extensions.
- Find Gamebryo Plugin Management. If it is disabled, enable it and restart Vortex.
- If the tab remains absent, follow Vortex’s troubleshooting guidance to install the latest Visual C++ Redistributable x64. If the extension still fails to initialize, check whether security software is blocking the module.

Check whether the original archive is still available
An installed mod and its downloaded archive are different things. In Vortex’s Mods list, a blank Archive Name column means the original downloaded archive is no longer available. Check the mod’s entry and status as well as the archive column before deciding that the installation itself is gone.
Vortex’s guide explains that removing a mod while retaining its archive can leave an entry available for reinstall, while choosing Delete Archive removes the archive. If the local archive is gone, use a copy you already own or an author-approved source; an absent or deleted mod page is not guaranteed to be recoverable. If a Fallout 4 mod is installed but still has no effect
After checking status and deployment, consider the Fallout 4-specific causes in the community-authored Fallout 4 troubleshooting guide. It discusses archive invalidation for mods that need loose files and possible antivirus interference with game or mod-manager executables. Treat these as later checks for applicable cases, not as universal fixes; do not broadly disable antivirus protection.
If the mod entry itself is gone
If the expected game and profile are selected but the mod is absent from the Mods list, check whether the original manager download or staged installation is still present. A missing online mod page is a separate problem from a manager display or deployment issue, and the available guidance does not establish a general way to recover a deleted download. For more specific help, note the mod name, manager, Fallout game, and whether its archive is still on disk.

If you are moving from the Nexus Mods app
Nexus Mods says development of its Nexus Mods app has stopped and development is focused on Vortex. Its support FAQ says there is no direct automatic migration path; its practical suggestion is to recreate or re-download the mod list in Vortex.
