Start at Settings > Storage to see what is filling your phone, then remove replaceable downloads and unused apps before touching personal files or app data. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, so use the closest storage breakdown available on your phone.

Find what is using your phone’s storage

Open Settings > Storage and look at the largest categories, such as photos and videos, apps, downloads, or offline media. You can also use the phone’s Files app to browse files by category or size; its name and features vary by manufacturer. Google distinguishes storage from memory: storage holds data such as music and photos, while memory is where programs run. Closing background apps therefore does not remove stored files.

Google’s general Android guidance says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. Treat that as a broad warning, not a universal threshold for every phone model: Speed up a slow Android device.

Free space in the safest order

1. Remove downloads and offline media

Delete content you can download again, such as saved movies, music, maps, or podcasts. Where possible, remove it from the app that downloaded it; Google’s examples include downloaded items in Google TV and YouTube Music. Check the app’s own downloads or offline-content section rather than deleting unfamiliar files. Google’s Android storage guide describes this approach.

2. Uninstall apps you no longer use

Remove apps you do not need, especially large games or apps with downloaded content. Google says a paid app can be downloaded again without buying it again, subject to the app still being available. Before uninstalling, check whether the app keeps important files or unsynced information only on the phone. Android storage guidance.

3. Clear an app’s cache selectively

Cache is temporary data, and clearing it may free some space. An app may load more slowly the next time it opens while it rebuilds that data. On many Android phones, open Settings > Apps, choose an app, then look under Storage for a cache option; exact labels and paths differ by device.

5. Delete local photos only after confirming backup

Check that backup has completed and that the photos are accessible in the backup service before removing local copies. Google says backed-up copies can be removed from the phone and viewed in Google Photos when connected to the internet. If a photo matters, confirm it is present in the cloud account first; seeing a backup setting turned on is not by itself proof that every item has finished uploading. Google’s storage guidance.

Cache, Clear storage, and app data are not the same

Use an app’s own cleanup or export controls first if you are trying to remove stored content. Clearing cache removes temporary data; Clear storage is more destructive. Google defines it as permanently deleting all app data, which may include settings, downloaded files, or information that has not synced. Check the app and account sync before choosing it. Google’s Android storage help.

Options for adding storage or keeping files elsewhere

Option What it can do Compatibility and trade-offs
microSD card Portable format can store files such as photos and videos. Internal or adoptable format can hold apps and files. Only works if the exact phone has a card slot. Portable cards can move between devices; internal/adoptable cards cannot be transferred to another device. Formatting permanently deletes card data, so back it up first. Google’s SD card setup guide.
Computer over USB Copy files and folders off the phone for local storage. Google documents USB file transfer to a computer. Verify the copy before deleting originals. Android storage guidance.
Online photo backup Keep backed-up copies accessible online and potentially remove local copies to free phone space. Confirm upload completion and access before deleting. Viewing backed-up copies requires an internet connection. Google’s storage guidance.
USB-C flash drive or OTG adapter Could provide another place to copy files. Support depends on the phone and accessory. The guidance cited here does not establish compatibility for any particular budget phone or drive.

Before buying a card or transfer accessory, check the exact phone model’s specifications. Do not assume it has a microSD slot, supports moving apps, or works with a particular USB accessory.

Can Android archive apps automatically?

Google Play can automatically archive apps that are not used often. Archiving removes the app while saving personal data and leaving its icon in place. Downloading it again depends on the app still being available on Google Play. This can help with unused apps, but it does not replace removing large offline downloads or moving personal files. Google Play app archiving help.
