If you drank water advertised as “radioactive,” stop drinking it and promptly contact Poison Control or a medical professional for advice. A marketing claim alone does not prove the product contains radioactive material or establish what, if anything, you were exposed to. In the United States, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 for collapse, a seizure, trouble breathing, or inability to wake.
What to do now
- Stop using the water. Keep the container and label; do not pour the remaining product into another bottle or discard information that could help identify it.
- Contact Poison Control or a clinician promptly. In the U.S., call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Share the product name and label, how much was consumed, when it happened, the person’s age, any symptoms, and any available test information. Poison Control can also provide case-specific guidance through webPOISONCONTROL.
- Do not induce vomiting or take a radiation medicine on your own. Poison Control says ipecac is no longer recommended. Do not take potassium iodide (KI) unless public-health or emergency-management officials advise it.
- Call 911 for an emergency. Do this for collapse, seizure, difficulty breathing, or inability to wake.
If authorities confirm a radiological incident, follow local public-health and emergency-management instructions. CDC describes its general emergency guidance as “Get inside,” “Stay inside,” and “Stay tuned”; a marketing claim by itself does not mean those steps are needed. See CDC response guidance.
Why the label cannot tell you your risk
“Radioactive” does not identify a particular substance or dose. The product identity, whether it contains radioactive material, the radionuclide, amount consumed, timing, and any symptoms all matter. Do not try to diagnose exposure from the label or taste, or estimate a dose from the wording of an advertisement.

CDC says medical professionals decide whether treatment is appropriate; small amounts of internal contamination may not need treatment. Why potassium iodide is not a general antidote
Potassium iodide protects the thyroid only in specific circumstances involving radioactive iodine. It does not protect against every radioactive substance or replace medical assessment. CDC advises: “People should only take KI (potassium iodide) on the advice of public health or emergency management officials.” See the CDC radiation FAQ.
CDC lists different treatments, including potassium iodide, Prussian blue, and DTPA, for particular internal contaminations. Which treatment, if any, is suitable depends on the radionuclide and a professional’s assessment.

What water to use during a confirmed emergency
During a radiation emergency, CDC says bottled water is the only source certain to be free of contamination until test results are available. Follow local instructions about tap water: EPA says local, county, or state officials make that decision based on the incident. Boiling does not remove radioactive material. If the concern is a private well or ongoing water supply
For routine or follow-up concerns about a private well, ask your local drinking-water office or radiation-control program which radionuclide tests are appropriate for your area. The right test depends on what contaminant is at issue; a generic home kit or meter cannot be assumed to cover it. EPA recommends certified drinking-water laboratories for water testing. See EPA’s guidance on natural radionuclides in private wells and EPA’s home-water guidance.
A water test assesses the water sample, not a person’s internal exposure after drinking it. EPA’s RadNet drinking-water FAQ describes routine sampling and laboratory analysis; monitoring or a water-supply standard cannot determine the health risk from an unknown product or one-time ingestion.
