Contact the hospital pharmacy and the clinician or team responsible for your treatment as soon as you learn the medicine is unavailable. Tell them when your next dose is due, whether you have any doses left, and what the pharmacy said. Do not stop treatment or change the medicine, dose, strength, brand, or formulation without professional advice.
What to do first

Get clear information from the hospital pharmacy
Confirm the exact medicine name, strength, formulation, and quantity that cannot be supplied. Ask whether the gap is temporary, whether the medicine can be ordered, when it may arrive, and whether another authorized pharmacy or hospital can help under local rules.

Contact the prescriber or treating team
Explain the stock problem and ask what to do next. Whether another medicine or prescription is suitable depends on the drug, your condition, dose, formulation, and medical history. Do not substitute a different product yourself. UK guidance says pharmacies unable to supply a medicine promptly should discuss available options with patients; any shortage-related alternatives must follow the rules that apply locally. UK best-practice guidance describes the pharmacy discussion, while UK Serious Shortage Protocols permit only specified actions under their conditions.

State how urgent it is
Tell the care team when the next dose is due, whether you have already missed a dose, and whether your symptoms are worsening. Ask what to do while the supply issue is being addressed.

Find out whether the problem is local or wider
A single pharmacy being out of stock does not establish a national shortage. Ask whether other local sources have supply and when the hospital expects to restock. UK guidance distinguishes local or temporary gaps from sustained wider supply issues and directs health professionals to the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service Medicines Supply Tool for national information. If you are elsewhere, check your health service or medicines regulator’s official shortage information. UK government guidance on medicines supply explains that distinction.
If your next dose is due soon or you have run out
Do not wait for routine follow-up if you need advice before the next dose. Contact the hospital team, pharmacy, or urgent-care service used in your country and explain the timing. The available routes differ by location. In England, NHS guidance lists NHS 111, a pharmacy, an urgent treatment centre, or the GP surgery for emergency prescription help; for an emergency it says, “If it’s an emergency go to A&E.” See NHS emergency prescriptions guidance. Outside England, use your local urgent-care or emergency service.

How to obtain medicine safely
Use a pharmacy authorized in your jurisdiction and verify its registration through the relevant regulator. The NHS warns that medicines from unregistered websites may be out of date, diluted, fake, or unsuitable; see NHS medicines information. Do not use an unverified online seller as a shortcut around a hospital stock problem.

What to have ready when you call
- The prescription or medicine packaging, if available, including the exact name, strength, and form.
- When your next dose is due and how many doses remain.
- Whether you have already missed a dose and whether symptoms have changed.
- The pharmacy’s information about availability or expected restocking.
The right substitute or source cannot be identified safely without knowing the specific medicine and your circumstances. Ask the authorized clinician or pharmacy what option is appropriate and how soon it can be provided.

Which rules apply depends on where you are
The NHS routes and Serious Shortage Protocols described above are specific to England or the UK. They are not universal rules for government hospitals elsewhere. Pharmacy substitution, transfers between hospitals, and emergency prescription procedures vary by country and local health system; confirm the process with the hospital or official health authority where you receive care.
