First check your newborn’s breathing and position—not the reason for the crying. Make sure the baby’s face is visible, nose and mouth are clear, and chin is not pressed to the chest. If the baby is slumped, their airway is obscured, or you are unsure they are positioned safely, take them out of the wrap and follow its instructions before trying again. If they remain upset, take a break and check ordinary needs such as hunger, a diaper, temperature, or clothing irritation.
What to check first: breathing and position
Look at your baby’s face and breathing whenever they are in the wrap, even when they are quiet. Their face should stay visible, with the nose and mouth unobstructed and the chin off the chest. A slumped baby or a chin forced down toward the chest can have difficulty breathing.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission warns: “Your baby should never be curled so that its chin is forced onto its chest as this can restrict breathing.” If your baby seems to be having trouble breathing, remove them from the carrier and seek urgent medical help.

Reset the fit if anything looks wrong
Keep your newborn upright and close, with their head and back supported in a natural position. Loose fabric can allow a baby to slump. Use the specific wrap according to its manufacturer’s instructions; do not add an insert or improvise a position the maker does not recommend. If you cannot keep the baby’s face visible and airway clear, stop using the wrap until you can review the instructions or get fit help.

If your baby is still crying, take a break
Crying alone does not show that the wrap is the cause. Newborns cry for different reasons, including hunger, tiredness, discomfort, or sometimes no obvious reason, and the sound of a cry is not a reliable way to identify the cause. Take the baby out if they remain distressed and check their needs outside the carrier.
- Look for feeding cues and offer a feed if appropriate.
- Check the diaper and whether the baby seems too warm or too cool.
- Check for clothing or fabric rubbing, bunching, or otherwise irritating the baby.
- Burp the baby when appropriate.
For general soothing, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests options such as rocking, gentle touch, talking or singing, and burping when appropriate. These are ordinary ways to comfort a baby, not treatments specific to wrap carriers; use what suits your child.

Check whether this baby needs clinician guidance
Ask your baby’s clinician before using a carrier if your infant was premature or has breathing or other medical problems. Prematurity, low birth weight, and age under four months call for heightened caution; they are reasons to seek guidance, not proof that a particular wrap is unsafe for every baby in those circumstances. If you are uncertain about the fit, a pediatrician or trained babywearing professional may be able to help check positioning. Medical symptoms should be discussed with the clinician.
Know when to call for medical help
- Urgent breathing trouble: Get emergency medical help.
- Rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher: The American Academy of Pediatrics advises contacting your pediatrician. Its guidance says this temperature could indicate infection.
- Inconsolable crying or suspected illness: Contact your baby’s pediatrician; an inconsolable baby may be sick.
General guidance cannot assess an individual infant, so contact the clinician who knows your baby if you are concerned.

If your baby falls asleep in the wrap
A wrap or sling is not a safe sleep space. Monitor the baby, and move them as soon as possible to a safe sleep environment.

Use a wrap only when it is suitable for your baby’s age, size, and development and you can adjust it to maintain a clear airway, visible face, and supported back. Read the specific product instructions and stop using the wrap if you cannot achieve a safe fit. Ask for help rather than guessing at a new position or adding an unapproved accessory.

If you are choosing a wrap, compare the manufacturer’s age, size, and developmental guidance; how clear and accessible the instructions are; how it fits both caregiver and baby; how easily it can be adjusted safely; and whether you can keep the baby visible and monitor their position. No cited guidance establishes a best brand or model, and buying a different carrier does not by itself explain or resolve crying.
